Newbie Sat Nav Question

Hi all,

I am looking at getting a 2001 Y Reg 1.8 Avensis Estate as my "new" second hand car.

Speaking to the showroom on the phone, the salesman said the sat nav system was a TNS200 - which came as a £1500ish factory fitted extra.

My question is ... I have conflicting info on the WWW about what version of the system this is. Can anyone tell me, therefore, is the TNS200 system 'greyscale' or full colour.

I have been told that is the full colour one. Is this correct ?

TIA for any help.

Regards,

Adam Brunt

It is the grey one and was not an option but standard on all Avensis from 2001 onwards bar the Vermont model. Early 2001 models do not have the ETA functuion in the Sat Nav. Easy way to tell is to look for 1 or 2 boxes in the boot.

Thing to watch is the update CD's - they are about £130 and I think the last update was 2003 and then they were discontinued in favour of DVD based systems.

Also if the car has a multi CD player fitted check that the Sat Nav has it's own wiring loom - originally Toyota piggy backed the multi CD onto the Sat Nav wiring loom and as a result it can trip. I think the Multi CDd was only on CDX models but could be wrong.

BTW - a 2001 Avensis is highly likely to have interior rattles and a PAS noise - not trying to put you off as they are basically good cars but you might want to do a few searches on these 2 issues before you proceed.

HTH.

Thanks for the reply SMW.

Sorry to sound like a thickie (I did say it was a newbie question) but ... this is the interior of another Avensis (2002 02 Reg Toyota Avensis 1.8 VVT-i GS) we are interested in. It also claims to have sat nav but for the life of me I can't see where it might be ??

Any ideas ??

dont head for a car purely for sat nav. there are plenty of really good transferable sat navs out there for around £400. most of them are better than the toyotas and can be added to. ie speed cams!!

Hi

It's the section below the centre air vents which you are probably thinking is the radio. The screen is LCD. The screen also displays mpg, fuel range, ave speed etc.

The voice commands come from the small round speaker which you can just see inside the wing mirror housing. The 2002 will also have ETA.

Looks like the one you have shown also has climate control and steering wheel mounted audio controls, I'm not sure if these are standard or not but either way a nice little touch.

That one also has single in dash CD so you won't have the multi player wiring loom issue I mentioned earlier.

What colour is it and how much are they asking ?
