Midlands Meet Co-ordinator

Very nice to see that not everybody is obsessed with 'slaming' 17's and 18's on their motor (and in turn make the handling worse!)

know what you mean. i wish i could make do with smaller brakes so i could run 15's or 16's. but with 350bhp (soon to be about 450) i need the 335mm discs and 6 pots so im afraid 17's are the smallest i can get .

Oops sorry dawesy didn't mean your example, some cars do need them (such as your wonderful creation). Plus I do feel JT's AE82GT looks superb on 17's.

My point was people with 13inch wheeled saxo's etc jumping straight to 17 or even 18 with out any realisation of what associated work is needed (i.e. washer bottle and plastic inner arches needing moving/altering on Pug 106).

Another example was a young lady who I work with came to us asking advice on wanting 18's fitted to her base model Clio  . She had some spare cash and went to ...wait for it ...'Allfrauds' (think you all know who I mean) and some urchin up there was trying to talk her into having them. Needless to say it was aborted, from what I gathered they were trying to 'offload' them from a previous cancelled order etc. :censor:

Alls well that ends well.

Unfortunately some people who work at Halfords don't have a clue. Halfords have some pretty good alloy/tyre package deals on at the moment.

I work at my local Halfords on weekends and there's only a handfull of us that know a fair bit. But If I don't know, I find someone who does before selling someone just anything.

You be surprised how many people come into the store demanding they want things and regardless what we advise they just want to burn money and do what they want anyway. Like last weekend an idiot wanted wheels for his clapped out Corsa (which cost more than the car is worth). We had none with the correct offsets and PCDs for his car and said we would order the correct sizes in. He refused to wait a couple of days and insisted he could get the wheels to fit his car. The following day he tried to return them damadged

Chances are he went to his friends and to his online forums and slated Halfords for bad service.

There are always two sides to every story...

Halfords are trying to train up their staff properly now and/or get more experienced people in. The company has big expansion plans, unfortunately this probably means they will still remain expensive.

:D :D :D :D heheheheheh what a story!!! (KNACKERED corsa and rims that dont fit and telling YOU how it is) killer!!!

this pic used to be my last twinnie, but this current pic is of my car with the rubbish alloys and thats all, but hopefully ill get the new one on soon.

I know bald tyres are bad but what can you do if you have no money and are in debt upto your eyeballs and then you need to go somewhere?? that was me (my anniversary) so took it out in rain and i used to always speed, and both times it was at a roundabout. .............................................................................................................................

This has been edited to remove the bragging about road racing which is illegal and which this forum does not and cannot condone ..............................................................................................................................

System~G: Hope I didn't offend you with my coment about Halfords (just reciting an incident that was all).

What annoys me with Halfords in the 'modifying' department is that they only seem to have access (and reference) to items for recent cars.

Due to them sometimes having discount deals on they can be useful as they are only yards away from where I work. Unfortuantely when I ever ask for (and would purchase) anything to do with a retro project they have nothing or don't deal with that firm/manufacturer etc.

A recent example of this was when I asked about the price of a pair of Cibie Oscar spot lights (actually needed 4 and knew it wouldn't be cheep) ...the lad didn't know what 'Cibies' were!

Another case was front suspension strutbraces: for a more modern car of mine they did a fantastic deal, it fitted perfect, no probs, well pleased. So when I wanted a strutbrace for a 70's vehicle (and I knew that a strutbrace was available for this particular car made by the same manufacturer as the one I'd just bought from them the week before) they just smiled at me and said "to old mate" and wouldn't even look it up :o so I had to source from elsewhere (and pay postage)

Sorry to ramble on but just wished to make a point

have you seen the Fensport corolla 3sgte video against a Celica GT4, Nove twin Calibra turbo engined, Corsa 350hp, Aston martin??? its a legal race and is about 10mins long, if anyone wants it, PM me your email add and ill send it ya, its a WICKED video and legal.

i would like to see this. can u send me a link?

also, i am trying to choose between a Saxo VTR and a Corolla GTi for my next car. the VTR is 0-60 in 9.1 seconds but only a group 7.

i think the rolla GTi is group 13, and i am wondering are the running costs likely to be higher? exactly how much faster is it, and is the handling better? i really liked the handling on my 1st car (1.3 12v '89) but i dont know if it came like that or had been modified (no history as bought at auction in ireland)

Saxo VTR or Corolla GTi: Naturally I will be biased and say Corolla GTi, but do sympathise on the insurrance issue with regards to younger drivers.

The 0-60 for a Corolla GTi is around 8 secs (I stress around). The handeling is very good and level of finish (especially inside, multi dial dash etc...) will knock spots of a VTR. Unfortunately the Corolla GTi is now a much older car than the Saxo VTR and despite the fact the Corolla GTi can still hold its own in todays hot hatch world there is the problem of rust, rust and rot with most Corolla GTI's. Can you find a good solid example or can you do bodywork or would a newer car (i.e. Saxo VTR) be better for you?

Round my neck of the woods older Hot Hatches from the 1980's Golf GTi, Corolla GTi, early XR3 etc. now seem to be getting more of a pleasant repected image, whereas a modern hot hatch such as the Saxo VTR seems to have a bit of a 'Barryboy/chav/sad'n'sour(Max power)' image; although I don''t myself like to generalise

I know rust can be a problem as I spent £200 fixing rust on the sills of my old one, before writing it off :(

Is there anything else to look for? I am worried about things I have heard about like cam-belt and head gasket failure. Is that just about the only thing to be aware of?

I am also thinking the GTi has skirts and a small 'wing' etc to make it look different from the base model. This may mean the police would take a different attitude if and when I am stopped for anything, as they will start to assume things before they even get out the car.

I am driving a Fiesta Zetec right now, and all I did was take off the Zetec Badge to make it look standard. Would you say a standard VTR looks standard with the Badge off, or is it in the same situation as the GTi (or worse)?

[off-topic] By the way, do Mercedes come with 15"+alloys as standard these days? I saw a traffic cop with massive alloys and thought it is a waste of tax-payers' money! Then i thought maybe there is no alternative option for them

Saxo VTR or Corolla GT-i? There is no contest!

The saxo will cost more to buy, will depreciate faster, and won't last as long!

'What to look for' on a GTi / GT seams to crop up every 3 weeks so hear we go again  :

My own experiance is rusting wheel arch edge of front wing and occosional seizing of rear calipers which cause handbrake failure.

However according to this forum the following bodywork problems are:

Rusty wheel arches (front and rear)

Sunroofs

Back of sills

Rear suspension 'towers'

Windscreen surround

Tailgate

...i've bound to have missed something

Mechanical seams to be:

Rear brake calipers can seize

Jumping out of 5th gear on high milers

Electrical

...no 'common' faults

No doubt someone will come up with more and quite rightly so.

No offence taken at all :P

I know exactly what you mean. I haven't worked there my whole life and don't intend working there for ever either - It's just a stop-gap. The guides in store are exactly that - just guides. And some times (no make that often) they are wrong. Whenever I find incosistancies or incorrect info in them I send Head Office an email. The stuff on the computers is more up to date due to the emailing system.

But still try finding the correct parts for my 20 year old MR2 there  :D

thanks for humouring me. knew about the 5th gear thing but i can live with that. so basically if i find one with little rust i should snap it up! not many of them up here in glasgow mind you

system-g wrong guides? that explains why the spark plugs i bought for my old corolla didnt fit!

About the 48mm bored exhaust, you said if you have no induction kit?

Actually i said about forced induction, i.e. Turbo or supercharger

I do have a performance air filter so do you know if the 48mm applies to me, or would i be ok with something around 2" as the 48mm is 1.889" (near enough 1.9") becuase what your saying and what i felt when i left the garage sounds about right, i kept wacking down the pedal and i was shocked, i just didnt move as prior, and i kept making excuses (you would if youd spent 510.00 on an exhaust and SOO much hassle to get it) but i HATE my exhaust. but if you do know more about the increments on bore compared to mods then the info would be much appreciated.

2" is just a 'common' size and readily available, i have heard of people running jigsaw blade along the pipes for about 5"-10" and then pushing it back together and welding it in place (do this from the entrance to the first box back up the pipe to the manifold) and getting good results, but its mainly 'bar racing' chat from people that have 4age's in circuit cars.

It maybe easier to make and fit a reducing cone inside the pipe (you can do this yourself quite easily) make a cone from 2" to 1.8" from mild steel sheet and press the 2" end into the pipe before the first box, then force a screw inbetween the cone and the pipe to secure it, take it for a spin and see how it changes with this tiny adaption before hacking your exhaust to bits.

You can wrap an aftermarket manifold as they're generally not 'cast' but mandrel bent CDS ;)

Ive decided on an exhaust, im guna get a Mongoose mid section as EVERYONE has positive things to say about it and guna get a Nice probably 4.5"can with 4"pipe just for looks, cus the mongoose backbox is a little common among twincams.

But them things you were saying about pipes and so, they sound like too much hard work :D . and i didnt even know what forced induciton was :lol: but now i do, hehe. (beginner me)

Just thought id tell you i have found the website www.topgear.com usefull for finding out performance figures on new and old cars! If you have an older car and want to find some info on it go onto the site above and go onto used cars and then proceed from there....
