Hello All

Just got back from a pleasant day in the las vegas of the east coast Cleethorpes, blinked and nearlly missed it lol.

Anyway heres to the main point.

About half a mile from home on return, noticed a strange noise when accelerating in my 98 1.6 with the 4afe engine.

my ears are highly developed and will pick up anything but the other halfs whingeing.

Got the old girl on the drive and revved her up ( the car , not the missus ) this is when i noticed that as the engine died down after revving there was a sort of a definite whirring or light drumming sort of sound, coming from the engine compartment ,seems to be coming from the engine itself. any ideas or advice would be appreciated , before i consider a more than likely expensive trip to the dealers

Regards Albi

You don't say what millage or which side of engine you think 'wierd' noise is coming from although some 4AFE 1.6 engines did have incidents with the Waterpumps wearing (there was a recall issued by Toyota on certain models, but this was about 3 years ago). Not much to go on, sorry.

Hello again,

Have had the car out again and got the better half to rev the engine.

The car has done nearly 42,000 miles .If i stand at the front of the car facing the engine and lean over the engine ,.the noise seems to be coming from under the inlet manifold ?. at the rear of the engine and is more noticeable as the revs die down in the last couple of seconds

Regards

The water pump (an power steering pump) is at the rear of the engine by the inlet manifold towards the divers side.

Usually if the water pump is failing it will show I slight water leak at the top of the pump. If you look down at it there is a little hole. wipe the area with a tissue so it's dry then when you next time come back from a run have a look at the 'hole' it should be dry, if damp it could be the water pump.

I doubt it would be powersteering pump these days, espacilly at your low millage.

Having said all that I could be wrong.

Also are the drive belts pulleys okay? can you excessivily 'wiggle' any?
