If it's less than three years old take it to your Dealer... The LExus boys have had a load of Alloy problems with Corrosion and have got their Dealers to refurb the alloys which from reading their posts come up better than new....

Definately go to the dealer...

rust on the hub is normal. they are made of unpainted cast iron after all. probably worse in your neck of the woods where the roads have salt or anti ice additives in winter

I wouldn't expect any alloy to rust or corrode after such a short period of time. Lexuas have a known problem that the original stock alloy's are not upto scratch and as such have agreed to give all lexi owners a three year warranty on their alloy's where they will refurb them for free if they have any problems.

I wouldbe surprised if Toyota could not offer the same courtesy.

hi..

had the same problem, but rust appeared within two weeks of buying the car. The the rust is on outside the hub cover, just behind the alloy, this wont be covered under the warranty. My dealer took pictures and sent them to toyota, who then paid for the replacment parts (cost the dealer nothing)

They did mine as i told them it didnt do toyota's image any good, two week old car with rust. The rust has reappeared again now, 14 months on. As its not under warranty, this time they probably wont do anything about it.

You could just clean them up and respray them i guess.

Surinder...

I think people are missing the point here...even though it's been said once or twice!

The wheel hubs are not the alloy wheels. Sure Toyota have problems with the finish on their alloys...and yes this is covered by the warranty. The wheel hubs are not alloy...they are not stainless steal...they are just good old iron. Iron mixed with water and air...gives you rust.

That's where wheel covers came from..plastic covered to cover up the rusting wheels... now we have fancy alloys...you can see the rusty wheels behind!!

Mine started to rust within weeks. This is not a manufacturing problem, it's inherrent in the design, and I very very much doubt you'll get replacements....besides any replacements will suffer the same fate within weeks. To keep them tidy and looking good, a good metal primer will keep the rust at bay...I just can't decide on the color at the mo...!!

i went to the dealer today and he has put a report into TOYOTA IRELAND HQ and has told me he will push for a replacement but if not i have the primer and paint to do a diy job on them

he did say the that they will not paint as it takes to much time and is a messy job to do

so i will get back on to them in a day or to and let you know

Hi everyone

Yes i too have got the same problem. In the end i just went out and brought some silver alloy paint and done it myself. I know that you might be able to claim for it but i couldn't be bothered with all the hassle.

I will go with Jerry on this one. I sprayed (or should that be my b/f) the hubs in silver hamerite spray. He only did the back and just rubbed down the front. The back still look good 2 months on but the front are rusted again! So I say that spraying works.

While you have the wheels off I fully recommend painting your calipers! They finish the look off nicely.

T

I have the same problem but just on 1 wheel(1 year old Toyota Corolla).

What do you think if I "paint" them with zinc spray???

Zinc (spray or colour) is very good protection against rust .

  • 3 weeks later...

just a little update on this matter

the local dealer took my car in yesterday because they had a rep from TOYOTA IRELAND HQ in to have a look at the car

they told me that the hubs and all the brake units and pads must be changed right away so they changed them on the back and front

will post a few pics of the new ones later on

It might be an idea that now they are new prime them and spray them to keep the problem from repeating itself...

Not only will you get longer lasting hubs as Vipes said but it'll look the puppies plums as MissTspot said :)

Mine is going in for its two year service in a couple of weeks- I'll see what they say when I point out the rust on the hubs. They know I'm anally retentive when it comes to my car!

Here's hoping, Peter
