Hi I'm new here thanks for the forums...hope to be here a while...

I just bought a '98 v6, 4x4, ext cab, 65k miles and want to know when the timing belt should be changed? I also would like to get a service manual...which is a good manual to get Chilton or Hayes or another recomendation. I am good at fixing cars is this a do it yourself job or should I leave it to a pro?

I also notice a gear whine in first and 2nd gear but no other gears....is this normal?

Thanks for any help.

Steve

I've heard the belt is good till at least 120,000 kms. Some say its good to 150,000 kms. I have a Haynes manual for my '98 4Runner. It's okay for most jobs but I would like a little more detail on others. As for the gear whine, I haven't heard of that symptom before so I can't help you there. I doubt that its normal. I'm guessing it's a manual tranny so I would assume it could be bearings. You might want to check you tranny oil for metal particles. Maybe even add some "Moly-slip" to your tranny. I'm a firm believer in that stuff because I've used it in my other vehicles.
