Carina Alarm

hi.

i have a 1997 carina 1.8 GS.

i have a problem with one of the remotes.

whilst one remote functions OK.

the other remote just doesn't work at all. when you press either button the red light comes on but nothing happens. i,ve tried changing the Battery on the remote.

anyone any suggestions.

Had a Carina until not long ago...

now, sounds like your remote has become unsyncronised.

here's what to do.

take out the Battery

press a button to clear any residual charge

replace Battery

then, either in the driver seat, or by the front of the car

(easier in the car, at least your warm)

press and hold one of the buttons until the light on the fob flashes

(i cant remember which button, open, lock or both - try them all untill it works)

This will then re-syncronise your fob, with your alarm.

I was dead worried about this when the dealer told me what to do, I had visions of walking up to any toyota and grabbing their alarm code!

However, I'm assured it only works with the key fobs registered to the alarm.

The alarm and fob are simply using a different code.

To echo PeaJay (who gets the kudos here)

I have a '97 Carina E 1.8 SI (UK Model). The remote keyfob stopped working (an all black keyfob with two black buttons and without an interface port, slightly oval shaped). The doors would no longer unlock using the keyfob. The car would start but the alarm sounded and lights flashed when I opened the doors. Not relaxing.

Rang Toyota who advised

1) Take the single screw out of the back of the keyfob and remove the back - this effectively removes the Battery.

2) Hold down BOTH buttons on the keyfob for 30 seconds (you may need to hold the pcb in place as, without the back on, it tries to come out). This has the effect of resetting/initialising the keyfob.

3) Replace and screw on the back then go to the car.

4) Hold down the 'door open' button on the keyfob for about 25-30 secs. This has the effect of re-syncronising the keyfob with the alarm electronics. Note: I saw the LED on the keyfob flash after a few seconds - it does not do that in normal operation so I guess that indicates a re-sync.

5) Try using the keyfob normally - it should now work.

The above worked perfectly for me - both on my usual keyfob and also on my spare which had been non-functional for about two years!

I am posting this up for reference/corroboration.
