Cam Belt Snapped :(

Hi,

The next part in the long saga of my 87 celica problems..

So, I had my car in a recovery company's garage for 2 weeks, and they couldnt sort out what was wrong with it.

Today I had it moved to another garage (owned by a friend of a relative) and they, within 2 hours, checked it and found the cam belt had snapped.

He says it's a gamble as to whether it's worth paying out for, the car cost £350. To put a new cam belt on woule be 200-300, and then we may find that the engine is damaged which could cost 600-700 +.

I've read somewhere on an MX-5 forum somewhere that the MX-5 has a "engine protective" design, so that if the cam belt breaks, it doesnt damage the engine... is there any chance that my 87 celica gt 2.0 has this too? I didn't hear any bangs or noises when it stopped, it just cut out.

Thanks for your help

Daniel.

Hi,

If it's the 3S-GE engine I belive this is classed as non-interferance so there's at least a good chance that the engine would be fine. At least that's what I've heard about the later versions of this engine so I see no reason why it should be any difference for you.

That said, I've had no *real* experience of this, just information I've picked up from other posts. I'm sure someone with more detailed knowledge will be along to help you soon.

stick a belt on , jack up a front wheel , put it in gear and turn the wheel by hand if it turns passed the engine compression then its fine , if it jams then you bent the valves .

i'd personnaly scrap it off for parts , its an old car and somewhere common sence has to prevail over the wallet.

Hmmmm. <_< Not sure common sense comes into it with these cars tho. I`ve got a '96 xantia TD and there`s no way i'd even consider spending a fraction of the money i've thrown at the celica on it. It`s a passion without equal...... Apart from the G/F of course. :D

Hi,

Yes, I've just done some research on yahoo and google, and found numerous other forum posts etc which also say that the 3S-GE engine is non interference.

So I'm considering getting the cam belt replaced.. obviously based on this guy's quote for it. The thing is, this guy is the owner of the garage, and he's a friend of my sister's so I don't think he'd purposefully overcharge - maybe his £200 thing was just a random off the top of his head idea of it...

Just ask him nicely for a firm quote, and if it`s still a bit high then tell him you`ve been told it`s a straightforward job and should only cost around a hundred. If he`s straight he`ll be ok with it.

Autodata give the times as 3.20 Hrs. So the quote maleborn got works out at roughly 25 quid an hour plus the cost of the belt. Which is good for a non franchised garage. Main dealer prices would be easily doubled. ;)

toyota do it for 170 i think. getting a garaged to do it is good, cos the tensioner is a git, the bolt that fastens it to the bulkhead threaded the threads in the engine side, not good. so bolt would not tighten up when putting it back, never heard my dad swear so much, my damn car as well :) he sorted it with some mechanic glue stufff :), dont want to be around when the cambelt is changed again on mine though :)

There is no sense at all in going to Toyota to get it done though. If you're car isn't under warranty then you're just paying over the odds to get the job done.
