Hi Guys,

Got myself an Avensis 2.0 vvt CDX (Y reg 2001) yesterday and so far I'm loving it!

Insurance company are saying that I need to install a Cat 1 alarm/immobilisor. Doesn't my car have one as standard?

Cheers,

Mike.

Not sure about the category

but you probably have a key and a fob.

or a key with buttons on.

(I dont know when Toyota went over to the single key. My Carina had a key and an alarm fob, my Avensis has one key  )

either way, your car will have an immobilisor and an alarm.

the immobiliser uses a transmitter in the key

(probably more of a responder as it is not powered).

The engine control unit wont start the car unless it has a matched key in it. Which is why you can't simply use a bog-standard key cut by Keys-r-us.

(and if you loose both of your black keys the dealer will ask you to part with loads and loads of cash to change the ECU, etc etc. )

The alarm is linked to the doors and probably also has a parametric function - ie detects if the car is lifted, bashed or glass broken. B)

You will probably be able to dead-lock the doors too. Biff the lock button twice - it should go clunk, CLUNK :D

I would think that your Avensis has enough protection built in already

check out the thatcham site for what classes as a cat 1 system. but as far as i know it just means more circuits are broken than with a cat 2.

But does a Y reg 2001 Avensis have the correct alarm ? My June 2002 certainly does but what about the previous year ?

Thatcham says....

All avensis have standard fitted Cat 1 Alarm/Immobiliser

feature codes: TC2, RS U/M LD

or in real words:

The key is - Transponder, Contact Key, Remote

It isolates 2 circuits

It has the following internal detection methods - Ultrasonic/Microwave.

And the other features are - Central Locking and suitable for Diesels.

hope that helps

Fantastic, that's EXACTLY what I wanted to hear!

You've just saved me about 300 quid. :)

Thanks again.

Mike.
