Oil Consumption

My local dealer topped my oil up about 4 weeks ago and told me to go back when I had done 1000miles. I went back this week having done 1300miles as I had a trip to Scotland. They then told me that the car had used 700mls and that it was within toyota specs. At which I said that is a lot of oil to use for a car that has only done 32k, so they told me to come back in 6 months. Can anyone tell me if the later VVti engine says the same in the owners manual 1 litre per 1000miles.

Also has anyone got any advise on what my next move should be? Will this problem get worse?

Regards

Pat

It's quite likely that it will get worse, very common problem with the VVTi series of engines, in particular the 1.8 though a friend of mine has a 1.6 VVTi Corolla and his burns oil too.

Not much you can do until the engine starts burning more than a litre every 1000 miles, but when it does Toyota will fit a new engine, you have until the car is 5 years old for this so don't worry about it too much for now.

5yrs/100000 miles as long as it has perfect Toyota service history

ie 750miles or 1 month either way

Hi there!

I`ve been following these'oil' threads as Ive got a 1.8 VVTI GS 2001 Avensis which has used over 1 litre in 8,000 miles. Have read all the threads and spoken to the garage who say 'oh its spec' etc...etc. So decided to take out the spark plugs on my car and low and behold! All four look black around the inside rim (of the plug) which isnt good but the one is covered in oil!!!!!! So basically there is a BIG problem with my engine and oil is getting past the piston and getting burnt hence the dropping oil level! My mind is now made up with this either they replace/fix the engine as there IS a known problem or I get rid of the car and get something else Toyota mmm??? Having done under 40,000 miles and had the services done by toyota approved garages there is no excuse its not like I drive it hard even!!!!! Watch this space-I gonna get some advice then I`ll be right back here with an update as soon as poss! NO WAY should oil be leaking past the piston-my old ASTRA was never this bad and that had been round the clock!!

If you have an oil problem have a look at your spark plugs and you might get a shock!!!
