So - I Decided To Get Cam Belt Replaced

What do you think the chances are of my engine being damaged, when the cam belt snapped on 1987 3S-GE engine, when I was at very low RPM, possibly ticking over with clutch down?

Hi,

I just wondered what everyone's opinion was on how much chance I have of getting away with no damage, since my cam belt snapped.

Having thought about it, I'm 95% sure I was just freewheeling along with the clutch down, due to traffic. If not, I was doing 15-25mph.

I've decided to go ahead and have them put a cam belt on and check for damage anyway :-D I feel hopeful.. just wondered what everyone else though :)

Daniel.

Sorry I had to vote quite high. A lot of information I have seen suggests that the 3S-GE is a non-interference engine, but I have one really good technical data cd which suggests that it is most probable that there would be damage.

I had a cam tensioner go on a ford escort, that was an interfence engine and all 16 valves, and valve guides had to be replaced

My Father in law managed to snap his cam shaft twice on his 405 diesel, each time we popped to the scrap yard wipped one off, paid a fiver for it and stuck it in - never did any other damage (other than a few bent studs!)

So fingers crossed that it will be OK

Might have bent one or two valves but i think you`ll prolly get away with it. I`ve repaired several cambelt snaps on different makes of cars and it really is a lottery as to whether it does damage or not. I think the 3S-GE is fairly sound in this department. I think the 3S-GTE is even more so because it has a thicker head gasket and different piston crowns. But anyhow... Here`s hoping your lucky.:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Edit... Sotal. The info your refering to. If it`s Autodata, take it with a pinch of salt. They`re very conservative with their opinions. They seem to think the safest engines may suffer valve damage. Perhaps they think they`ll get sued or something.

Forgot to mention when my cambelt went on the Escort, I had my foot on the clutch. I had just slowed down from 70mph to 30 and was coasting through a speed camera when I heard some funny noises, pulled over switched engine off and looked under bonnet. So I don't think it helps much

I didn't even get any funny noises u see... the engine just cut off, I didn't even realise until I put my foot on the accelerator and got nothing, then I just let the car freewheel off the road...

Hopefully you've not damaged anything, but the easiest way to find out is to put a new belt on and do a compression test.

Didn't bother voting in the Poll though, I can't really see how my opinion can change what's happened ! :D

Hi!

There was no engine damage, I have the car back, and it's all running nicely :-D

It seems the cam belt wasn't actually snapped, but the water pump had siezed up, which he showed me, and where the cog wouldn't turn any more, it had sheared off the cam belt's teeth.

Anyway, I'm not sure if that makes a difference to the whole "non-interference" thing, because it didn't actually break, but I guess I can now add to the list of people who say that the 3s-ge really is a non interference engine :-D

nippy, the head is non interference. if youve snapped a belt, the oil pump may he tired too.

generaly, if youve snapped a belt beacuse of seized pulleys - you may have engine failure within 500 miles.

tom. Stop it .

haven't you learned anything from TOC??

Don't go to Toyota unless you are under warranty. You're just paying more labour costs. Go to an independant place where reputations mean more. You'll get a better price and they'll do it properly.

Can't recommend anyone in yor area though, as it's miles from me and I don't know any places round there.
