Carina E 1.6 - Spark Plugs

I have a '92 Carina E 1.6, which needs a new set of spark plugs. Found a set of plugs and HT leads on eBay for £80 (!), but I also found a set of plugs for a fiver which, apparently, are OK for a Carina 2.0 or Avensis, didn't say if they were suitable for a 1.6. Tried emailing the guy and also emailing my local Toyota dealer but so far no joy. I heard the car needs platinum spark plugs (the cheap ones on eBay were copper) but can anyone confirm this, and give me an idea of how much I should pay? Don't want to go to Halfords and get ripped off.

Any help much appreciated.

You'll need platinum plugs for the lean-burn 1.6 (see other threads for engine identification). Around £40 for a set - mine were replaced for this in December 2004.

PS Platinum plugs give better spark essential for the leaner mixture.

Make sure you get the right leads as well as they are different lengths depending on the engine and distributor fitted.

The combustion chamber of the leanburn engine gets quite hot, thus like the Wombleman said, put a platinum one in although you can still put a conventional one in but will not last as long at the platinum ones.

As for the compatibility issue, you can use the ones for Carina/Avensis 2.0 on your 1.6 as well. However, you will need to adjust the gap to 1.3mm. As for the price, platinum ones are usually expensive. Buying them in Halfords will likely to be even more expensive. I will go for a local parts shop.

By the way, you car's plugs should be NGK : BKR6EP-13

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that. Reckon I might go for a set of Splitfire plugs - I've heard good things about them and I found a set for 30 notes.

  • 2 weeks later...

get the ngk or denso oem plugs...the extra tenner will be well worth it. Don't think you'll be getting a good deal with splitfire...!
