155/173bhp GTi against a 81bhp TD. No comparison when you look at the performance stats. Only benefit of the TD is the decent MPG compared to the GTi

Mileage on carinas is nothing to think about as long as the cars been maintained well.

GTi is an all round better car being jap built too

Totally TD. Fuel economy conbinated with a high torque at low revs, very helpfull in crowded roads...

I have to agree with Rach. The 2C-T on the Carinas are OK but not the best. Apart from the fuel consumption, you got to put up with the sluggishness, noise and vibration.

But you can have both, power and economy. If I were you, I'll go for the GTi and have it converted to run on LPG. Then you have a mean machine which is quick yet, it would probably be cheap to run than the 2C-T. I currently run an Avensis 2.0 (3S-FE) running on LPG. The fuel consumption works to an equivalent of 62mpg to 82mpg depending on how I drive. How may diesels can match that hey? :hokus-pokus:

can you really match 62mpg to 82mpg on a 2C-T???

To convert mpg to km per litre, you need to divide the figures by 2.825. So, 62mpg will be 21.95km per litre.

Actually we did 26 Km per litre!!! with full tank and the trunk loaded with our vacation bags...

Wow! That is impressive man!!

Mind you, the equivalent figures are so great on LPG is that here in the UK, the petrol and diesel prices are so expensive...

Yes, I know.

Here, in my case is still cheaper the diesel. Other cars may be not.

But after having 2 cars LPG converted, I realized that I had more disadvantages that the savings could cover.

IE: Dont even think about converting a electronic fuel inyection engine, because they will certainly cut wires,

On rainy days, dont dear to "dive", cause you will certainly get stuck in the middle of the water.

Torque, GOD I hated the lack of torque...

Half of the trunk is wasted...

So I decided to go for the turbo diesel,

HUGE torque 18KGm

can cross urban lakes during hard rain

fuel economy ( of couse, if you dont have a heavy foot)

The turbo whistling that I love...

Engine simplicity

And other things that make me love more my Lady Carina everyday

So that's why my friend, I recomend a TurboDiesel

Well, the LPG conversion depends on how it has been done but I had a Caldina on LPG before my current Avensis but had no problems either. And they are both fuel injection type engine.

I know you are supposed to lose power when running on LPG compared to running on petrol, however if you have a 2 litre petrol engine, especially the 3S block, the loss is not really noticable.

When you say you lose the boot space, Coyote, I guess you went for the cylinder tank. I went for ring tank which neatly sits under the boot floor thus as far as loading capacity is concerned there is no sacrifice. People who don't know that my car is converted on LPG, they won't even notice by looking at my boot.

I suppose the road condition is different to start with I guess, plus the fuel prices will be different also in Argentina as UK probably has the most highest price for fuel in the world!! Therefore, LPG will be more cost effective option in the UK. Furthermore, if you go for the GTi converted to LPG, you can have the power and speed together with the economy.

It must be said, the 3SGE engine is beautiful to listen to. The GTi is a car where you'll want to drive with the windows down and the radio off purely to hear the engine. We've fitted a stainless steel cone filter to ours, and you can hear the engine sucking in air through it

Im a sucker for a nice engine

I think because its our second car, and therefore doesnt cover that many miles, the fuel consumption doesnt bother us. Im sure it probably will when the exec comes off the road, and the GTi becomes our main car :lol:

Cal, sorry to hear about the Caldina by the way :(

Thanks Rach.

I think I proved the safety of these cars. If not for the Caldina, I could have been seriously injured. Also, I proved how safe the LPG system is as the car got hit from behind with an impact which the ash tray flew out of the front dash board and hit my face...

I wish I could have 2 cars like you... ;)

If Nick got his way, we'd have three carinas by now! Hes been looking into either an estate or another GTi (but a saloon this time lol). The fact we have no space in the drive doesnt matter to him lol :lol:

If it's a D4-D (direct injection) then I vote diesel.

Chip it and have power AND economy.

If it's an old IDI motor then I'm not interested unless it's turbo, 6 or 8 cylinders and has a star hood ornament on the bonnet.

If it's an IDI Toyota, then I say go for the GTI, unless you are ready and willing to play with the engine to coax more power out. Bigger turbo, large intercooler, maybe a chip. Then you're ready to play.

Hi,

Personally, I would definitely go for the Gti as I currently own two of them, a white one and a metallic black one, both saloons.

Plenty of room inside for the kids and the performance is great.

I've been a Toyota fan since the time I worked in a local franchised dealership, and since then I have only strayed to another make once, and that was a Honda Integra 16v, but as soon as I had bought it I knew that the next car would be a Toyota.

Even the wife trusted my judgement and she is driving round in a Corolla 1.8 Gxi.

For me, the Gti is one of the best cars I've owned.
