All this talk about the VVT- I i (lift) in other posts got me thinking that I don't realy understand how this feature actually works......all I know is when my CTS hits 6,200 rpm something pretty amazing happens  and the car propels it self forward, so exactly how does this work.

Also where does it have it's roots is it in formula 1??, Rally cars ?? or something esle.

Any body care to post a link to somewehere so as I can get a better understanding of this technology.....

Cheers in advance folks.

Here you go, this link should explain it all to you:

http://www.corollaperformance.com/TechInfo/VVTLi.html

As far as origins, as I understand it, Honda is responsible for developing the technology. It began in their F1 cars and then they were the first to bring it to regular passenger cars in the early 1990's I think, but Toyota's VVT-i and VVTL-i are similar to VTEC in principle only. The way they work is somewhat different. Different enough that Toyota doesn't have to license any ideas from Honda to make it work.

Today many manufacturers have variable valve timing technology. BMW VANOS and double-VANOS, Porsche VarioCam, Honda VTEC, VTEC-E and i-VTEC, Audi/VW VVT and several others. Those that don't have their own technology, license it from others.

Toyota's VVTL-i is one of, if not THE most advanced of the all though, since it affects lift in addition to the usual variables.

Hope that helps.
