Hi all,

I have been reading this useful forum ever since I brought my beloved Celica last summer. Love the car to bits but I quickly grew acustomed to the speed and handling of the car and I want more!!

I wanted to quiz you guys n' gals about what modifications you guys have done which are worth doing to my celica, as I have seen some rude celica's in the gallery.

I currently have the car lowered, strut brace, custom exaust, K&N induction, 17" fox alloy's, huge ICE & sat nav.

Right, now you know what I have please help me with what else I need to do as every other performance mod seems to cost wedge e.g. turbos, cams etc.... I know chipping the car is the next stage but I want to get your oppinion on how much performace increase you get from doing this as I hear you only get a couple of extra ponies for the money. Anything else worth doing apart from this? to get better handling & performance out of the car? Thought about a TRD quick shifter (is this worth 180 quid?)

Any comments will be appreciated cheers all.

Hmmm. Personaly i`d swap it in for a GT4. Don`t have to spend vast amounts of money to get these cuties shifting (Apart from the insurance) As for the quick shift... Forget it. Make your own and pocket the difference. :D

I thought someone would say "just get a GT4". The thing is I don't really wanna change the car just yet and I did not do any of the performance mods mentioned myself as the previous owner did the majority of them, so I have not forked out much money on the car yet and wanna make my own modifications to the car.

How do you do the quickshift mod yourself? Is there any info on the internet which will show me how to do it? :help:

What Bhp gains can be gotten from chipping?

Cheers.

Here`s a link for shifter modShort shift

It`s for a gen 5 but the gen 6 is pretty similar. And the technique is the same. Just make sure someone competent with a welder does it. You don`t want the lever coming off in your hand

Chipping?? You pays your money and takes your choice on this one. There are some wild claims out there. Best bet is to ask around and see what the best recomendation is.:thumbsup:

Waste of money IMO especially if u have an import cos it wont or cant gain u anything

It's a UK model Celica, so it sounds like it might be worth it then, 8Bhp is not bad for 200 quid!

Looks like this is the obvious choice then. The low rev lack of power is anoying aspeculy from a standing start.

Do you guys know anything about the Unichip mod as I have read this is one of the best?

u can get that 8BHP for free tho

i dont see the difference between one of these chips and turning the distributer really... well i know the chip will create a bit more of a curve advancing the ignition highest in the higher revs

ud be best of with a rolling road tune

I spoke to some mechanics at my local rolling road and they said they would not be able to tune the engine on a rolling road due to the ecu managing all the settings and not worth the time and money or something like that...

So was looking to go to a rolling road in windsor to get a Unichip but if the fensport one just bolts on to the ecu then that would save all the hastle of having the car of the road while it gets remapped.

Cheers for the advice i think i will get the fensport chip, decat the exaust & get a trd short shift from tuneacar. :D Looks like I need to get saving then. :ffs:

yeah but he can turn the distributer to advance the ignition. thats free! Why spend £200 on summit that u can do for free. Either way u will need to run on superunleaded.

anyway i give up... im staying out of these chip debates from now on.

thats my last post on this topic i promise.

I'm with cookci on this one. But I would recommend the Unichip. However, you also need to budget for setup time on a dyno, which will cost more than the Unichip itself. Don't expect miracles but it should make at least a small improvement. If you do go for some kind of chip/ECU please get a power/torque curve immediately before you install it as well as afterwards, and post it on here. That would be a great help for when the next person asks your question.

I guess that 'other' chips can make an impact on low end pull by advancing the ignition timing. You will then need to run on super unleaded to cope with this timing. It is slightly different to moving the distributor because it only affects low speed advance (without over advancing the top end and hampering peak hp).

The reason the gen6 3s-ge is a bit weak at low revs is because the standard cams are designed for peak HP and not low end torque. The torque curve is flat at low revs, and that's what you feel. The standard cams make peak power at 7000 rpm (redline). It would be pointless changing them for any more agressive ones without a stronger bottom end and an aftermarket ECU (I think the Unichip can also defeat rev limiters).

The first thing you should do is a de-cat. This will get you ~5 hp. You will have to come up with a solution for getting an MOT though.

The second thing you should do is remove your "huge ICE". Not only does it add loads of weight, but the alternator is working it's !Removed! off to drive it. Hence even more power is wasted.

DECAT pipes work wonders on this car :D Nice increase in power right through the rev range especially low down

still not mentioning the ****word :D

where in windsor is there a rolling road mate? u from windsor?

No mate I am from Reading but I read about a company called millway see website here: http://www.millwayvehiclespecialists.co.uk/ and they told me they could sort me out with rolling road and unichip see copied e-mail below:

Thanks for your e-mail.

The Dastek Unichip is the system we recommend for getting the most from

your current set-up. Basically it is a piggyback computer which interacts

with your existing ECU - we are able to optimise fuel & ignition maps via

this box which give us better part throttle & full throttle response & extra

BHP!

Total cost is £470.00 all inclusive - this covers fitting & full mapping

session on dyno. We need your vehicle for about 5 hours.

Best website for further info is www.dastek.co.za which is the manufacturers

website.

We are currently booking about 1 week in advance.
