Hi, i didnt realise how cheap backboxes are and my local garage will only charge £10 installation. So I am thinking of getting a new one, but i dont know anything about them....

Will a universal backbox fit or do i need a certain one for the yaris?

Would i get much sound from a 1.0L?

Will a cheapo one off eBay fall apart?

And what does a silencer do?

Thanks

Q. Will a universal backbox fit or do i need a certain one for the yaris?

A. You will probably find a universal one somewhere, but it will need to be the right fit.

Q. Would i get much sound from a 1.0L?

A. Depends what exhaust you get, some sound different from others.

Q. Will a cheapo one off eBay fall apart?

A. Don't know, i've never bought one.. but it's a Japaneese car, why not buy a Japaneese part?

Q.And what does a silencer do?

A. Exactly what is says on the tin... silences the exhaust, ever heard a car without one??.

I have an RSR ExMag GTII on my 1.0l.. sonds as good as errr as a... err good thing... £340.00 now do you think they are cheap?

If you get a stainless steel backbox, regardless of what make you get, i'll last longer than you do :)

I had a peco squared oval on one of my previous cars, made a hell of a racket, when I sold the car I took the exhaust of, steam cleaned it and u can't even tell that it was used.

The beauty of stainless steel.

Don't get a mild steel one as most car exhausts are mild steel and eventually they start to blow.

As previously stated; a silencer is merely the device that silences the sound of the exhaust pipe, its acutally part of the backbox (infact some garages call backboxes "silencers") it doesnt mean that the exhaust is quite, just quieter than it would be without the backbox on (which, ofcourse, is illegal as if breaks european noise stuff).

I would personally buy a tailored one, universal ones don't fit as snugly and can rattle, if you get one that is for your car then the shape, fitting pipe and fitting brackets will all be the right size and length, just makes it a lot easier. The Peco one I had was only about £100 in stainless steel and tailored to my car, most major manufactuers provide their range tailored to lots of different cars.

Do bare in mind that the only thing a backbox will do is add cosmetics to the car and a nice throaty exhaust note when you boot it :)

no extra power or anything.

You can get a TTE one for the 1.0l too. the ones from the 1.3/1.5 do not have the same fitting (I found out the hard way!!)

For the price of the backbox alon you could get a cat back exhaust system made as loud or as quiet as you wanted.

Agreed.. but surely you'd want a Jap one on a Jap car?

any future mods i may get will be exempt from being Jap.. just incase that statement comes back to haunt me
