Standard Fit Sony Wx-c570r Cd/fm/tape 2001 Celica

Hi all,

I've got a 2001 Celica (7th Generation I think they are) 190 VVTL-i. The stereo it has is the standard factory fit Sony WX-C570R (the double height one which has CD, Radio and Cassette).

What I want to know is...

1. Does this stereo have RC out leads on the rear (so I can connect an amp) or does it depend which revision of the stereo it is?

2. How can I get this out of the centre console without smashing my dash to bits? Most steroes have some little removable panels either side, which you take off then slide a couple of thin screwdrivers down each side and out it pops.

Does anyone know the proper way to remove these stereos???

Cheers - Sid

haha, you're in for a right barrel of laughs with this one!! I ripped mine to pieces on Sunday wondering pretty much the same stuff...

The dash has to come apart completely for you to get to the stereo - it is very securly screwed to the car! Its all pretty easy though, just as long as you are careful.

Start with the silver plastic surround which goes around the gear stick. if you LIGHLY pull it up, starting on the right hand side (when sat in driver's seat), it will start to unclip. This will come right off, and you can disconnect it from the gear gaitor quite easily. Unplug the !Removed! lighter, and remove it completely.

Undo the two newly revealed screws at the bottom of the Climate Control, and remove all knobs (gentle pull away from the unit) on the climate control unit (this is where me and thee differ - I have air con, and I don't know what the differences are - from now on, I am only talking from my experience). On the left, and right hand side, about half way up the c/c unit you should reveal 2 more screws with all the knobs off - undo these as well.

Now, pulling VERY gently, the entire silver plastic surround up to the clock should just pull away from its clip holders. Start at the bottom, and work your way up. Disconnect the clock, and remove the entire panel.

Bish-bash-bosh - stereo mount points revealed!

Took me about an hour to figure it out - it was the screws behind the Air Con dials that had me foxed, but now I know that, its a 5 minute job to do.

I can't highlight enough the need to be careful with what your doing though - I can imagine a new centre console ain't a cheap part to buy if you break it!

As for the RCA Connectors, I don't know I'm afraid - I didn't have my socket set available to me at the time, so didn't actually remove the stereo. I seem to think it does though, as Toyota offer under seat subs (at cost!), and I can't think of any other decent way of doing it....

Good luck!

Oh, and congrats on the purchase of a fine car! Just wish I could have afforded the insurance on one myself... Oh well... :)

Thanks for the info dude!!!! Sounds like a bit of fun....

I'd also got a quote from a reputable car audio centre to do the work for me, and they were saying about £60 give or take.....sounds like a barrel of laughs, so I'm wondering if it will end up more like £160!!!

I just hope to god it doesn't all rattle once re-assembled!!!

Ouch... If thats including the stereo bracket for a single DIN stereo along with a small pocket or something to take up the space, then maybe its worth it... (go for one that screws in to the original mounting points, rather than one that just clips in to the centre console - they are far too easy for idiots with screw drivers who like the look of your stereo to get to it!)

Honestly, if you've done it before on another car, its like riding a bike, you'll very quickly get the hang of it again. If you haven't done it before, just always err on the side of caution, and you'll be fine. Remember that if you think you are tugging too hard on something to get it free then you probably are - stop what you are doing, take another look at it, and see if there's a better way of doing it. When I did mine, i did it all with my fingers - other than unscrewing screws, of course! It all comes apart, and goes back together very easily.

Me and my House Mate always work together on stuff like this - one to do the work, one to stop the other when they are about to do something stupid but haven't realised! It has saved us both so much hassle in the past. So, if you have a mate kicking around that could lend a hand, even if its just to watch you make sure your not about to break anything, it'll help. The reward will be 10-fold for doing it yourself, than paying someone to do it for you!

When I come to actually put my stereo in, I was gonna do a piccy guide as to how to do it on the G7, if you can wait a month or so for me to get some cash for the Single DIN kit, and for a nice day to do the work then I'd be glad for someone to check through it all, and confirm / ammend my ramblings, and for a bit of guidence on the climate control part, as I don't have that.

I just hope to god it doesn't all rattle once re-assembled!!!

Mine's gone back in sweet as a nut! No rattles, no nothing! Might be a different matter when the subs go in though
