Sports Exhausts

You know how you can get more power/performance from fitting a sports exhaust, well what I want to know is how does you car become more powerfull from an exhaust?? And is this only if you fit a full sports exhaust? Not just a backbox?

I don't know much about exhausts, so someone here will give more info. But, a sports exhaust can give better air flow/breath faster. Exhausts also help draw gases out as each cyclinder fires - an exhaust that's too big can reduce performance. I would have throught the most important part is the exhaust manifold.

I'm not sure fully how exhausts work I only know from motorcycles that a bit of restriction low down the revs actually improves power at low rpm's, yamaha had an exup exhaust system on some superbikes that literally was a flap in the exhaust that restricted air flow creating back pressure which increased power low down as the engine revved higher the flap opened further increasing air flow and allowing the exhaust gases to escape.

If the flap stuck shut as some did (faulty) it would decrease power higher up the rev range its always suprised me that more cars don't use a similiar system probably a cost issue?

I also know the shape, size, length all have influences as well...

I was lucky enough to have a tour of the BAR F1 factory and you would not believe how complex the exhaust is on an F1 car...

as posted you need a happy medium,if there too big you get warm air gettin suck back up to the engine,to small and the engine cant get rid fast enuff.like mateus said the manifold is the most important.
