hi all,

right, i'm debating an engine swap in the near future...

probably going to be a 4efte into the Cynos.

i know a few of you have converted paseo's/Sera's so i'm after a spot of guidance.

if anyone has any tips on what i need & whats involved that would be a great help.

Thanks,

J

i think all you need is a new loom for the ecu and its pretty much a straight swap

i too am looking to do the swap, ive just concluded, i want to do both a 5efhe swap and a 4efte, so ill swap the 4efte in first, then get another 'seo and swap a 5efhe in it :)

u'll have to sort something out about the intercooler (either front mount, or have an intake on the bonnet for the current top mount), you may have to swap the whole drivetrain also (possibly)... u will also have to sort something with the exhaust... andrew(toyotasera.co.uk) will probably be along soon, hes the guy to talk to.

Rich.

best thing to do mate, is get a new mappable ecu and turbo the 5efhe, buy a td04 kit and some forged pistons and youll be laughing.

will go like stink.

but itll be a lot cheaper with the 4efte cause its already purpose built :P

btw, is the 5efhe actually a better platform for turbocharging? its been asked loadsa times but ive never gotten a solid answer...

I'd say that the 5E-FHE isn't a better platform for turbocharging, mainly as no one has done this successfully ( and relatively economically afaik ).

The 4E is already turbo'd and easily tunable too.

Bear in mind that the car is a front wheel drive vehicle, so you do have an upper limit on how many horses you can get away with before things bend !

IIRC ( and I'm sure Andrew can confirm/deny this ) there's a starlet GTT somewhere tuned to well in excess of 300hp.

yeah, ive heard of brownster and whatnot, and im fully aware of fwd limits. iirc the guideline for max power through front wheels should be around 250hp...meh

well on andrew's site there is that 300hp 5efhte sera. i dont know, ive heard of how the 5efhe is a generally stronger "block" than the 4efte (though the 4efte has obviously had its internals upgraded to take on turbocharging), and that if it is prpepared for turbocharging, i.e. building up the bottom end, that itd perform better (as well as the fact that it has a higher cr, capacity, better cams and the acis). though obviously its gonna cost a lot more for the 5efhe

is that a good thing? :bye:

the fhe has higher compression, which is worse for turbo'd cars. the larger compression, the more air you can stuff in, therefore, the higher psi, thus, larger explosion=more hp. i say the 4efte, bore, forge, then t3/t4=F$%*&$)@*#$ quick, m8

i guess...meh, im still gonna buy another 'seo and do both...

and lmao dev, just realised your address

i also said pistons aswell, you can get low comp pistons for the 5efhe, or you could do the head gasket trick.

im just saying on a personal level, id turbo the 5efhe, if you could do the work yourself, it wouldnt cost, and you dont have to mess about with wiring and stuff then. youll generate alot more power from the 5e than the 4e. you gots to remember the cynos is bigger than the starlet, so it looses its appeal with the power to weight ratio.

OK, thanks guys.

i've got a bit to think about now..

Ther reason i wasnt a different engine is the current one in the cynos is a bit worse for ware now, its on 191000kms (just run in i know lol).

but its ideling rough, has a short somewhere & feels generally feels tired when i drive her.

i'm taking the opertunity to sort everything out in one hit,

engine swap, respray, bodykit, etc...

im also starting to learn mechanics & bodywork, so hopefully through out the year i'll beable to do a lot of the work myself...

buying a starlet halfcut would definitely be the way to go.

u dont want to go opening up the engine unless its nessessary, and its not.

Does anyone know the website for John Barns motorsport ( i think) they do engines & the rear disk convertion for the Paseo?

lol, thanks. I'm sure i tried that one but got a racing company :help::lol:

i'm not buying an engine yet so your safe lol

I disagree there are several Tercels here in the USA including mine using the 5EFHE with all standard internals and yes with the high compression 9.8:1. I drive my car daily and will be upgrading from the CT-9 to a TD04L in the near future. My car is the only one using the CT9 all the others are using T4/T3 turbos on custom manifolds with 3 inch downpipe and 3 inch exhaust system, with the 4EFTE distributor/coil, 4EFTE wire harness and ECU with 440cc injectors and the APEXI SAFC to trim the fuel curve. One car currently uses the Greedy eManage piggyback with the 4EFTE ECU. On race gas all three cars make 290HP at the wheels at 21PSI. On 93 RON Octane pump gas these cars are daily driven at 15-16PSI

I have the 4efte engine in my 2nd gen paseo, got it through jon barnes motorsport. and have the rear disk conversion with ABS.

have they got the abs compatible one now?!? cause last i checked it was for the ST spec only i.e. no abs...

btw, did jb mount the motor for you too or did you get it done separate?
