Right, I will try and describe this the best that I can. I am having engine problems. The engine is tapping really badly, the higher the revs go the faster the tapping gets. But it comes and goes, can go a week or 2 without hearing it then it comes back worse than ever. I was told it was more than likely to be one of the oil lines were blocked , so the cams werent getting enough oil and were banging up and down. So i got some engine flush and flushed it through and changed the oil twice, but it is still there. But I have found that if I accelerate hard and bounch the revs off the red line a few times it seems to stop tapping, sometimes for days!

I took it to a garage just down the road from me, and the said they havent got a clue what it could be.

Any idea what it could be?

Does it sound serious? If it is I will prob do the 4e-fte swap.

Is it likely to break down? ive got to drive up north next week.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated

Thanks

Richard

sounds like what mine did and if it is im sorry to say its not well at all

mine was the piston gudgen(sp?) pins and bottom end shells caused by oil starvation due to a blocked up oil sive

not sure i understand it but it gets worse and worse then dies

Sounds like a top end noise like cams, lifters ect.By the way you describe it its sounds like a small blockage sumwhere and when you redline it the pump is pushing hard enough to over come it(hence why it stops the noise) If its a loud noise it aint good. I would not be driving long distances in it !

sounds like a tappet stuck to me

i would try taking the head off and having a look? you say you've flushed it but i doubt that would cure the oil blocks.

also might be worth switching engine off, getting a large socket and ratchet and spinning the crank round by hand and seeing if you can hear anything?

good luck

I was thinking along the lines of what Hou said.

Take the sump off and flush out the oil pipe and grille, there's a chance it's blocked up with gunge and therefore starving the engine of oil. At higher revs it may be forcing it's way through and curing the tapping.

Don't know if this will cure it, but it's an easy job to do yourself, and if it works it'll save you a few bob.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, I also meant to say that the performance and petrol consumption is still exactly the same as they were before. The tapping does seem to be coming from the top half of the engine, I will have a go at turning the crank tomorrow, see what I can hear or hear what i can hear lol.

Also when I had my mot a few months ago just after the tapping had started, they checked the oil and none showed up on the dipstick, so it seems to be coursed from a lack of oil somewhere. I keep checking the oil on it now, but its abit too late :P

Thanks again for ya help

well it finally died 155 miles away from home, thought it was worth a try. Got to try and get it home today, then strip it down and find the problem to fix it.

Sure you will be hearing from me asking for more help lol.
