Before i start with the nitty gritty i'd just like to say HELLO to everyone, as i'm sort of new to this site. I mean sort of because i've been reading your forum for the last couple of months and i've only just registered :D.

I would appreciate any help anyone would care to give. I bought a 91 mk111 n/a as a part project knowing that it needed new discs and pads and a bit of tlc. I did brakes and gave it a bit of a clean up. Had it on the road for a weekend then the head gasket went. (I was not happy as the chap who i bought this off of was a machanic for the RAF and he told me that he had just done the gasket) Anyway took off the head to find that one of the pistons was melted and the same port was scored. :censor:

Had a great idea i would get a turbo engine and plonk that in. I bought one and from what i've been reading on this site i would be able to swap the exhaust cam for the n/a one. Would i also be able to change the inlet cam as well? If so would i be able to put both in without any problems? ie any timing changes.

If not is there anywhere that you know of that sells them at reasonable prices as Toyota ones are extortionate!

Thank you

Is the turbo engine you bought not complete? If so whats wrong with the cams it has?

If your missing cams i would get proper turbo cams.

The N/A is bound to have slightly different timing - seeing as the compression ratio is diffrent.

Hello leeky, the engine came complete but you can see where the lobes are missing and then hitting the valves. Not even wear pattern either.

Did you get the ECU, wiring loom, intercooler and all associated plumbing ?

You should not put NA cams in a Turbo engine, timing and lift will be quite different.

Also IIRC one of the cams on the NA drives the distributor whereas on the turbo block its the cam position sensor, i'm not sure whether the keying would be the same. I'm sure Karma will confirm or correct on this one, rather than me digging out my manuals.

Hello Martin, yeah i got those plus other stuff. It was only the cams that were the problem as far as i can tell so far. It looks like i will have to get new ones, do any of you know a good place where i could find some,or decent second hand ones as money at the moment is a bit short as i've just lost one of my jobs :( .

Thanks for all your help everyone.

Sure somebody on here will be able to help with the replacement cams as there are a lot of 7MGTE's around (gave my last one away)

Hello mate and welcome!!!

What colour is the car? Auto, manual? (curiousty) I am about to take delivery of a car from an airforce base in Norfolk.... Hopes its not the same one!!!!

Engien are fairly easy to come by.. A couple of years back I bought a 7M-GTE with all the looms, ecu, turbo, etc to convert a non turbo car to turbo for £650!

In theory a short block should be less!!

As for the n/a cams... there have been discussion about this... some believe it give a great improvement, others don't... I personally beleive, that as Toyota developed the n/a version of the engine first, they would not have developed new cams for the turbo version if they yielded less power! DO NOT buy new toyota ones!!!! there are plenty about!!! I even binned a set when having a shed clear out :ffs:

I'll keep an eye open for engines for you, I know a couple of people breaking mkiiis...

Have a look on www.Mkiiisupra.net, (good site for bits, and knowledge) Hopefully www.suprasonic.co.uk will be revamped and more helpfull soon... but don't count on it as its my site

Bleh....

Ignore me I just re-read you post... you want to convert an N/a to a turbo....

I have done this conversion my self, and luckily for you I decided to doa write up on it!

N/a -> Turbo guide

I have some of the parts you will need (loom, ECU, downpipe, various pipe bits etc) but its best to get it all off the same car if you can!

Before you drop the engine in I'd reccomend changing the headgasket. and if you can, remove the EGR

Any questions feel free to ask.

EDIT: Blimey, your in luck!

Hello Karma Supra

Sorry about the delay.

You mentioned that you had the engine loom, downpipe and various pipes that I would need, How much do you want for these?

I already have the ECU.

Do I need to do any rewiring from the ECU to the Dash as I got a Turbo Dash with the Turbo gauge in?

If so could you supply?

I still need cams, if you know where I could obtain these it would be excellent. If I put used cams in would I then have to shim them up?

Could you give me more info on removing ERG, do I take cover off and just blank holes?

Was it RAF Coltishall that you are going to pick up from?
