I own an 1990 Toyota Camry with an A/C problem. The A/c works great but only when I press the HI button on the a/c. The low, and middle buttons do not work. I was told that I needed to replace a small chip under the glove compartment that controls the other buttons.

Your help is appreciated.

It sounds like your blower motor resistor has gone bad. A lot of the gen. 2 Camrys had this problem. It's located under the passenger's side glove compartment. Look under there. See that black plastic cover hanging on the bottom? Take it off. You should see a plastic convuluted tube running from one small pipe to another. Look under the tube, and slightly ahead. You'll see a plug with wires running from the passenger's side kick panel to an insert in the firewall. The place where this plug goes into also has one screw holding it up. Unplug the plug and unscrew that screw, then just pull out that little thing that the screw was holding up. That's the blower motor resistor. It should have about 3 or 4 curled wires that've been soldered together. In your case, some of the ends of these coils might have come lose and lost contact with where they were previously soldered. You can try using some super sticky glue (not white glue though), and just stick 'em back. It's worked for me, but only every now and then. If you really want your a/c's fan speed to work right again, you can always pay your local Toyota dealership a bag of money and they'll basically give you a new blower motor resistor. I think they're kind of expensive though, so be warned.

I had the same problem.

In mine, the biggest coil was broken near the end so, having access to a soldering iron, I removed the smaller piece of the coil that was broken and soldered the longer end back in it's place. The only effect this has is that the slower blower speeds are now a little faster then before.
