Hi all,

Should the 1.5 engine in the latest t-sport sound so clatterey? It sounds almost like a diesal when revving at a stand still and when moving off. After about 10 mph and into 2nd gear it sounds ok. And when on the move it sounds sweat and the exhanust purs.

Should i get it checked out or are all vvti's like this? Was thinking it might improve as the miles pile on but 600 miles later and no improvement.

Thanks

DOM

Shouldn't sound "clattery" at all. Very sweet, smooth running engine.

no sound of diesal in your car then? o dear........ maybe i should pay a visit to toyota. :crybaby:

Definatley take it to toyota. There should be no clattering sounds from your engine. They are very smooth, nice engines. Just make sure the dealer doesn't give you any crap. I'd wait until 1000 miles has gone though first, then they can't use run-in as an excuse.

dont wait till 1000 get it back now in case its something major.

I agree with Kimi, let them see it now, it might be serious and you might not want to wait to 1000 miles to get it seen to!

It's common. Mine sounded the same way when new especially. Everyone's idea of "clattery" is different. I think these guys are imagining a TDI. I know what you mean though, it's much quieter than a diesel, faint even, but you can hear a distant "pocketa-pocketa-pocketa" sound at idle, correct?

I don't have the T-sport Yaris, but I have a car with exactly the same motor and I've read MANY posts about the same issue. In fact I posted about it when I first got my car!

When you run it in properly, a few months or so, say halfway past your first oil change, the sound will quiet down a bit. It just has a bit of a noisy valvetrain, not an indication that anything is wrong so no worries.

It's all relative.

These are nice, smooth engines compared to most, but I've experienced many 4 cylinders that were quieter, smoother and more willing to rev. Compare the 1.5 to a Honda 1.7 for example. Honda's small 4's are far quieter and smoother. Part of that is probably the long stroke of the 1.5, but that gives it a bit more torque and response so it's a trade-off I'm more than willing to make.

I'd say on the scale of 4 cylinders for smoothness, these Toyota mills rank about a 7 out of 10.

But that's not everything. I don't care if you have the "smoothest" 4 cylinder in the world if it won't last, and I don't mind a slightly gravely 4 cylinder, if it has good low end and I trust it will last me for a long time.

You need to get your car checked out.... My car hasn't a hint of gravely-ness... it's totally smooth, has a willingness to rev that almost everyone who gets in it notices and at idle, most people don't even know it's running!

It's a very smooth, quiet, free-revving engine. Anything other than that and it's got a problem. Probably all that crude oil all you americans use.

I'm trying to share actual experience with this person, not a guess. I've heard of the "issue" I've experienced it and I've resolved it.

I have no problem with him taking it to the dealer. They will tell him the same thing I did.

I was simply trying to allay any irrational paranoia because I'VE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING.

Mobil One synthetic in my car.

You are a child and this is probably your first car so you have no experience upon which to form a valid opinion on this. I've had at least 7-8 cars and driven countless others. You don't even have the 1.5 to begin with so I don't know why you're commenting at all.

Stop trying to be clever, you're failing miserably.

The point was:

1) This is a known issue, I've seen it on other forums, experience it myself and resolved it.

2) I was providing an educated opinion (see #1) You do not even have the 1.5

3) I've owned and driven many 4 cylinder cars, you have not. You have no basis for comparison.

I can only assume Dom came here for useful information, not guesses from a little boy.

Sorry I hurt your feelings, but you stepped on my toes first with the twit comment. You were out of line to the only person in the thread who had any experience with the issue and could comment on it specifically.

Dom, go to the dealer if you need a little reassurance, by all means. Come back and let us know after he tells you everything is fine.

Yep, i don't have the 1.5, I have the 1.3 which is basically the same. But I myself, my brother, my dad, my 2 uncles, my 2 grandfathers and about 10 of my friends have been into cars since they were about 2 years old so i know that when a car makes an odd noise... it isn't right.

I also know that 80% of our dealers are useless and will always use the excuse "we couldn't find anything wrong" when there is clearly a problem. If you, as the owner of the car feels there is a problem, then you get it sorted until you're happy.

Also, you didn't hurt my feelings, that's not happened for a while, i can take a lot oif abuse.

Just ramble all you want with your techno-babble, i gave sound advice, which is if you don't have the knowledge (Insult removed) then you should let somebody who knows check the car over.

You're not here to check his car... it could be someything bad, and you're telling him to leave it. Nut-ah, get it checked. Through the medium of text it's sometimes hard to explain a true problem, so his may be worse than any of us can see or think, so best option is to get it checked. Impoliteness removed

I don't disagree with going to the dealer, that is never a bad idea.

I just wanted to reassure him that he is not the only one to ever experience that phenomena and that it is most likely nothing at all. Lots of people who know little about cars get paranoid about every little change in tone of the exhaust and go running down to the dealer in a hysterical fit about it (which is why dealers so often seem "not to be able to fix the problem") What's worse is when people like that get on the internet and start giving one another advice.

I won't try and talk anyone out of going to the dealer for a check up, just trying to assure him he doesn't need to panic.

And I can assure you that in the world of 4 cylinders, the NZ motors are not exactly buttery smooth. They aren't bad at all though.

this is england, we are nice people and twit isn't a bad thing to say. Also, read my second post... twit!

Plus, this is a family forum, if you've got a problem with me, send me a PM and do it off the forums as that's not polite. But since this topics gonna get closed now thanks to you. I suggest you F**k off back to that hole you call home.

This experience with you has only grounded all knowledge previously gained... that americans are nothing but jumped-up arrogant ubikholes.

You are way out of line seveer unaek!

You should apologise for being so rude and abusive... :ban:

I apologize, Seveer. I shouldn't have gotten personal with you. There was no need for it.
