Sorry... nipped out for a diet coke... gotta keep my weight in check!

I too am sorry for getting personal, i try not to let it happen, but sometimes things like this get me rilled up sommat rotten. I never said panic... i never panic and go running to the dealer... i hate the places, they're full of lies and free coffee. All i meant was that it could be something else other than your problem and since we can't hear it, if he has no idea, then he should check it. I think that that is a perfectly rational andsensible piece of advice.

But yes, sorry for being arrogant... i suffer from it and sometimes get a bit annoyed.

True, we can't hear the noise and there's less harm in having it checked than not having it checked.

I'm hoping it's the same thing I experienced, but perhaps only a trip to the dealer will tell for certain.

Make sure and take advantage of the free coffee while you're there (but not the lies if you can help it)

Ι have also noticed this clakery sound the other day.

That was because the weather starts getting better now and I have the windows open.

The noise tends to disappear in 2nd gear doing 30mph but that is probably because the engine noise covers it.

It might be also that this noise is more noticeable now because the oil needs changing.

In my country you dont have to but you are advised to change your oil every 4700 miles.

Especially people who tend to use their car for short distances, only in the cities and find themshelves often in traffic jams shouldnt keep the same oil for 10000 miles.

I think you should listen to the american guy,he knows a lot about our car.

There is some oil,a bit expensive, that makes the engine more quiet,I will change back to that oil when I go home in summer.I cant remember the make now,but we have tried it in many cars, and also in my mechanics car -a mercedes E kompressor-and it is really working!

glad to see that everyone is calming down now.....

You all seem to be saying good stuff which i appreciate.

Hi all,

it's much quieter than a diesel, faint even, but you can hear a distant "pocketa-pocketa-pocketa" sound at idle, correct?

When you run it in properly, a few months or so, say halfway past your first oil change, the sound will quiet down a bit.

I'd agree with you when you say faint - i noticed that on my old 1 litre. But this seems to be a bit more and not only at idle but when blipping the throttlle (say to 2k). It sounds perfectly smooth when doing 30mph in 4th tho.

Its either a 'pocketa-pocketa-pocketa' or a tat-a-tat-tat but my concern worsend when i listened to it with the bonnet up. Sounds like the pistons are hitting the valves just slightly (so i went and got some ear muffs and safety glasses)....not that i think they are. Just trying to explain. tis hard to explain noises on here.

I'm sure its nothing but i think i'll nip into my garage on saturday. I'll let you know the result.

cheers all

i noticed exactly the same noise in mine last week,

the only thing that worries me is that I noticed it after a race with a Huyndai Tiburon 2.7 V6 automatic.........at least I won him ............Japan Power :D

  • 3 weeks later...

Finally been to chelmsford toyota to ask about this noise. The fella said that its normal - he can hear the tapping from the injectors and thats it. Apparantley the noise is greater becasue its an aluminium engine and therefore has less sound insulation properties.

Still cant believe that it. I thought a 1.5 would be much more refined than my 1litre. :crybaby:

My concerns live on now that 'andy c in da house' has posted something about timing chain noise.

Hi all,

Should the 1.5 engine in the latest t-sport sound so clatterey?  It sounds almost like a diesal when revving at a stand still and when moving off.  After about 10 mph and into 2nd gear it sounds ok.  And when on the move it sounds sweat and the exhanust purs.

Should i get it checked out or are all vvti's like this?  Was thinking it might improve as the miles pile on but 600 miles later and no improvement.

Thanks

DOM

Im sure its nothing serious but get it checked out. but when idling the engine will run at as slow as possible to save on emissions. Does it feel like its going to stall. i found this on my 1 litre yaris. and on my 1.3 sr. thats what the vvti is.

Na, never really seem them drop on this one yet. It revs high at first.... 2k revs and then dies down to 1.5 once warmed.

My 1litre does the same. I blip the throttle when the last rev bar vanishes!

My previous T3 revved high too - used to rev at around 1800rpm (or approx that - cant quite remember exactly) and then she'd drop down to around 1100/12000 - I know she always used to have one of the full bars on the rev counter showing. I blamed it on the VVT-i, the Blue is much "calmer" now tho, and usually doesnt have any of the full bars of the rev counter showing.

I asked a lexus mechanic the other day and he told me that noise comes from the injectors.

By the way I changed my oil today. Why on earth Toyota UK suggests semisynthetic oil for the Tsport? They didnt have full synthetic oil!

Glad am going home soon...

I told you.

Like I said, mine did that as well, it's just a characteristic of this motor and it is well-known It will smooth out a bit as you break it in but it won't ever disappear entirely. It's nothing to be concerned about though.

If you want a whisper quiet 4 cylinder you need to buy a Honda because Toyota doesn't make them I'm afraid. Nothing wrong with these engines though. The percieved "smoothness" doesn't necessarily indicate better quality or more longevity or anything else. It just means quieter. Don't read too much into it, you've got a good car, just enjoy it.

scionic, what model is that silly car which looks like a truck in scale in your avatar?

does Toyota try to punish the Americans by selling them so ugly cars?

The aerodynamics on this car are just tragic...

Anyway,I never judge a car by its appearence but I would never give my nice money for a truck in scale...

No actually it's designed strictly for the Japanese market. They just took a calculated risk by trying to sell it here. Actually the Cd is 0.36 I beleive, which isn't as bad as you'd expect. It's about the same as a Subaru Forester.

I would never give my nice money for a car that looks pretty but cannot fit all my friends and my stuff like I require it to. I didn't buy this car for how it looks, I bought it because I got all the Yaris/Echo qualities I wanted, but with a firmer suspension and the room of a large saloon inside and when I fold the seats down I can carry a 7 ft long sofa.

Over time I've really grown to like the way it looks though, but at first I was not 100% in love with it. Practicality was more important to me than having a cute car that does not meet my needs.

If I wanted a small cute car that didn't meet my needs, I would have gotten an MR, not a Yaris.

Have a look here... scion website

I like the look of the tC but the B is obviously an acquired taste.

See what I mean? clicky

Anyway... back on topic.

Ferrariboy, have you had the chance to listen to another T Sport? At least you could get a comparison then between it and yours (sorry, the scientist in me coming out there :P ). Failing that, find a Toyota dealer with a T Sport and ask them to let you hear the engine running just to put your mind at rest. Daft idea or no?

Just as well, eh? Seeing as they don't sell the Yaris there, not even as the Echo hatch.

Nope.

The closest thing we get is the Ist (Scion xA) but it is very, very similar in size and form factor to a Yaris. Same platform, same engine, etc, etc. But it was not roomy enough for me. I frequently carry passengers and cargo, I like to go camping, throw my mountain bike in the back and so forth. Yaris and Ist aren't quite there for me though I like them very much.

I know its a bit late in the day for this but here it is:

I have the same problem with my TS, toodling around town in a high gear and low revs it does sound somewhat dieselish (only somewhat). a little bit clakery, once you drop down the gears and get some speed up it goes. Mines 2nd hand and has done over 20K but I'm putting it down to the oil that was in it, it was just standard oil. As soon as I changed the oil to synthetic oil it went away. (I use to have to use synthetic oil in my V6 probe or I got high end tappets in that, think its just a thing with modern jap engines)

Good idea! I'll try and do that. Trouble is i never see any TS's in any garage (looked at loughborough, romford and chelmsford and none) and i dont know any1 with one. I saw that Chelmsford toyota had a used example when i asked about this problem actually. Maybe i'll turn up as a potential buyer and asked to hear it running!

So you recomend using better oil? That excludes toyota's or do they do different stuff?
