St202 Automatic Gearbox Problems

I have a 1996 ST202 automatic. I've recently had a recon engine put in it and it hasn't been right since. The gearbox started by no changing properly, then I lost second gear altogether, it would just overrev and then slip to third or first depending on acceleration.

My local garage said the gearbox needed rebuilding or a reconditioned one added. Whilst waiting for a recon it started acting very strange. First and second went, leaving only thrid and fourth (a nightmare up hills!) - however it didn't seem to mind, as if it thought it only had two gears. Shortly after it wouldn't select any gears so I decided I'd better not drive it anymore.

The problem now is that it seems stuck in gear. When in park it goes forward, when in reverse it goes forward. And it seems really flat. It's blocking my driveway now and I can't move it back at all.

Does anyone know whether this is gearbox or clutch or anything else? Thanks in advance.

cant be clutch if its auto mate , sounds like the veins inside the box are blocked , or the bands are goosed , a recon box or an overhaul are in order, have you checked the gearbox oil levels ????

Thanks for the speed response. Gearbox fluid is fine. Do you know how much an overhaul and recon should cost. Nobody down here (cornwall) seems to know much. Cheers.

you need to contact an autobox specialist or have a second hand box fitted .
