Induction Kits And Fuel Consumption

Got loadsa questions today...

I've looked everywhere, and every place I go I get a different answer.

I've got a K&N induction kit, which the previous owner says dramatically increased fuel consumption on a celica GTR.

I've checked manufacturer web sites, and they say that it should IMPROVE fuel consumption, tho I don't see how that could be as more fuel is being shoved into the cylinders.

Anyone else got experience with this??

from my experience i use more fuel - that noise at high revs is good stuff :D

induction kits increase the density of cold air entering the throttle body. i expect that the ecu adjusts to this modification by increasing the fueling - although not by much. the performance gain from my apexi filter is negligable - what has imprived most is the throttle response and general drivability, especially lower down the rev. range.

Induction kits don't increase the amount of fuel shoved into the cylinders - they increase the flow of air, thus (in theory at least) increasing the efficiency of the combustion process and possibly increasing the fuel efficiency.

In many cases, they do increase cold air (which is denser and therefore creates a better 'explosion'/combustion) which therefore increases the bhp possible..........but you have to be careful to ensure that the induction kit is properly 'ring-fenced' from the rest of the engine bay to ensure it sucks in cold air and not hot air from around the engine (which is less dense and detracts from performance).

Best thing to do is get an induction kit with a cold air feed or create one yourself with a length of piping - position the opening near a wheel arch and feed up to in front of the induction cone. This will increase the theoretical performance of the induction kit.

Sorry, what I meant to say was that as more air is getting into the cylinders, the ECU is injecting more fuel.

I'll fit my induction kit tomorrow, get a pipe from Halfords, and see what happens!

Even stock the Celica beats the Porsche 924 I used to have, that was a right dog of a car. :censor:

Not quite the same i'm sure but I fitted a K&N57i kit to my Mondeo last year and it increased fuel consumption slightly, but the engine noise and increased performance more than made up for it! ;)
