I think this might be fun, and uh.. I can't sleep so here goes.

We've got different ways of referring to a few things so I thought I'd start a list in the hopes I might pick up a few new ones and maybe teach you all some 'mericanisms.

So here are the ones I know as of now, in no particular order:

BRITISH..............................AMERICAN

Crisps .............................. Potato chips

Chips .............................. French Fries

Pram .............................. Baby carriage

Lift .............................. Elevator

Saloon .............................. Sedan

Estate .............................. Station wagon

Flat .............................. Apartment

'To let' .............................. 'For Rent'

Petrol .............................. Gas, Gasoline

Derv .............................. Diesel

P*ssed .............................. Hammered, Sh*tfaced

Brassed .............................. P*ssed

Chuffed .............................. Psyched

Football .............................. Soccer

Rugby .............................. Football, only without pads or formation and pass the ball backwards

Cricket .............................. WTF are they doing in those outfits, is this over yet?

Chav .............................. (in cars): ricer, riceboy (anywhere else): guido, wigger, many others

Lexus lights......................... Altezza's

Mr. T .............................. Toyota dealer

Barmy .............................. Wacked

Boll*cks .............................. balls literally, Bullcrap figuratively

Cuppa .............................. Cup a tea, except we hardly drink it.

Puff ................................. !Removed!, though here "puff" means to smoke marijuana!

Sod all .............................. nada, nothing

Porkies .............................. Pot pies, with pork in 'em instead of chicken

Nutter .............................. Lunatic, wack job

Thats all that's coming to me now. Who wants to add.

Before any rugby fans get upset, I know more about rugby then I reveal there, I know it's not American football!

Don't quite agree with all of them - Never known anyone call a diesel a derv (most people call them a diesel)

We use Hammered, sh*tfaced or p8ssed they are all interchangeable.

We have french fries they are thin chips, then bigger chips are "Chips"!

We have flats or apartments, flats are normally cheaper housing, apartments are generally a posher word for flats - such as the new million pound luxury apartments in Birmingham

loft - attic

torch - flashlight

lorry - truck

pavement - sidewalk

motorway - errr. . . freeway / highway ? ? ?

cross roads - inter section (?)

BTW - is there an american term for lay by or a UK term for block ?

In the UK 'porkies' would normally mean lying as in 'telling porkies' from pork pies (rhymes with) lies. Confused !

Lets not get started on rhyming slang . . . .

Yep, freeway, highway is right. Highway is most common.

We use "loft" as well, but to mean a second story room with a railing that allows you to look down into the floor below. Attic is the top floor of a house usually with sharply raked walls and low roof, often accessed only by a hatch and ladder.

Pavement here refers to the asphalt, the part you drive on.

Crossroads = intersection, yep.

Describe a lay by to me.

Well I never say attic - block yes as in 'take a walk round the block' but not as in go 3 blocks down etc.

lay by is a small section of 'extra road' usually a few miles apart which allow motorists to pull over and stop safely so that others can overtake or sometimes they have toliets / bins etc. in them

hope that makes sense.

I think the American definition of loft we would call a gallery or possibly landing.

yeah, we'd probably say two streets down i suppose...

we dont use blocks in the same way because of the way our houses are built...

as in all over ther place! :)

And I ask where the "toilet" is .. I don't need a "bath" or a "rest" when I need a toilet !!

Ah... a rest stop?

That would be the closest equivalent.

It's a tap .. not a fawset .. heh heh

Yeh, see we put a tap in a keg of beer, but when it's attached to porcelain, it's a faucet.

Toilet works here as well. Just don't ask for the "loo" or the WC or Water Closet or you'll get strange looks.
