Radio Problem

Please excuse me if the question is a bit on the stupid side but as i know next to nothing about cars I thought i would try you guys out for a bit of advice.

I have a 2000 Toyota Avensis which is fitted with what i assume is a standard Double Din Sony CD/Radio. Over the course of the last few weeks the radio reception has gotten steadily worse until this week it has gone almose completely unless i am in an extremely good reception area. The rest of the unit works fine. Now not being much of a mechanic i assumed that perhaps the ariel had come loose out of the back of the unit, so after managing to get the console out i checked and the ariel was in fine. The cabling (what i could see of it) looked in good condition but not wanting to attempt to take anything else apart i didnt no were else to look. I dont particularly want to spend a lot of money to get it repaired and if it was down to the unit itself i would rather just replace it.

Therefore two questions:

1. Any ideas as to the problem

2. If i have to replace it do you know if there is some sort of double din conversion kit to allow me to insert a singe din unit in its place

Many thanks

john

Seen this happen to a radio before and it was an issue with the radio itself, turned out to be a dry solder joint on the aerial input. If radio can still power up OK then it may be fixable if you know someone who won't charge you 50 quid an hour.

Is the model you have the facelift version with integrated stereo unit. If so I had this model previously and could not find a facia adapter anywhere in order to install a single DIN unit. I contacted the company who make them (Autoleads in the UK) and they said at that time that they do not intend making any. You can still put in a new single DIN unit it's just your dash will then look bad.

Hope some of this helps.
