Young Driver Insurance On Yaris 1.0

A friend of mine to looking to get a Yaris 1.0, but direct line are asking £1900 TPF&T or £2100 Fully Comp !!! Endsleigh, who supposedly specialise in insurance for young driver and students, also came up with an expensive quote. He's 18, a new driver and living on the south edge of London, but even so - that seems like an awful lot of money! My insurance was never as bad as that (think I paid about £1000 on my first car) ...

Anyone know any good insurance companies for a young driver to get insured on a basic Yaris? Would be really interested to hear who anyone under 21 went with to insure their Yaris?

Churchill are quite cheap they were going to insure me for somewhere near £1300, on a 1.3, but they wouldn't insure mods,

also try www.confused.com

No offence but adrian flux rip you off, they wanted £3500 for my yaris with alloys and exhaust, then I tried CIS and they wanted £1800 and thay don't charge you for extra mods.

im insured with Cis, everyone in my household is. Cis are cheap but their after services are absolutley rubbish, their legal services "DAS LEGAL SERVICES" have to be the biggest bunch of clowns ive seen so far. With my bro's claim, twice they lost the paperwork and had no clue what was goin on themselves. and its true they don't charge for mods..but when you wreck the aftermarket part, cis tend 2 get funny about the part, instead of them locating the same part, you have to. that what happened with my bro.

I used Tesco with my first Yaris - they were much cheaper than anyone else

Edit: Has anyone mentioned Elephant yet?

I'd give Elephant.co.uk a try and do an online quote. I'm insured with Norwich Union and they are pretty reasonable!

Can your mate add his mother or father as a secondary driver as this would probably bring the price down?

Seveer is 19 and he has a 1.3 Yaris I think, he could be of some help here.

I think he said he pays 1300, but I beleive he is on his parent's insurance. That is usually the best route for young drivers in the U.S. and probably the U.K. as well.

Insurance law in U.K. is complicated and not to be taken lightly.......best you do not comment upon something of which you have no real knowledge

He didnt exactly comment anything Steve - he said "and probably the UK as well" - he wasnt stating it was or it wasn't!

Personally I didnt involve my parents in my insurance, but then I'm a bird and its normally cheaper for us anyway so granted I dont know much about being named driver on your parents policy..... however it may work out cheaper that way. The only problem is that you will not gain any no claims of your own and should you have an accident under your parents policy and should they not have no claims protection they will lose their no claims if you claim on their policy.

Yeah, I started my insurance myself too.

It was expensive the first year (about 600 quid from Tesco for a 1.0S garaged at the end of a 2 mile track in deepest Perthshire) but as long as you stay accident free (not easy...) then you should find that it decreases pretty quickly. It helps if you can garage your car or if you have a drivway. I don't have either and that seem to be the biggest obstacle between me and reduced rates...

Oh yeah... stay well away from mods for the first year too as they will knock the prices sky high.

I got my T-Sport the day I turned 20, with no mods, no NCB and on my own insurance cost with Direct Line was £1350 (online + 10% discount). When I turned 21 this year (1 year NCB) cost was £650, again with Direct Line, always the cheapest in any option on all cars and situations I've run.

That's why I said "probably", man.

If insurance isn't cheaper when on your parents plan there I would be :censor: amazed because that's how it is everywhere else.

I didn't exactly attempt to explain insurance law in great detail there, so get off my :censor:

Scionic, the problem is that it's hugely frowned upon over here. Infact a lot if insurance companies won't let you do it (or require you to have a good long chat with them before they do).

As for young drivers insurance, it depends on where you live more than age. At 19 I was able to insure my T-Sport for £1100 with 0 ncb (probably £200-£300 more at 18 I would hazard a guess). But, I was also able to insure a 1.8 focus cheaper then my 21 year old friend! Dodgey! All about your postcode ;)

I got mine online from Norwich Union Direct using confused.com, I was looking at £1500-£2000 on my own so did a quote on my mum's & I got it for under £600. I couldnt ignore that kind of saving so I'm probably going to stay on it for a few years.

It's called 'Fronting'

If, for example, you are on your parent's insurance but YOU are the main driver of the car, and the parents hardly ever drive it and you have an accident, your insurance company can (quite rightly) refuse to pay out!

My mother's worked in insurance for 20 odd years so i've picked a few things up along the way...

I currently pay £836 per annum on my 1.3 and i'm on my own insurance for the 1st time this year, thus have 0 no claims bonus, but have had my licence 5 years! but i have a Manchester M29 postcode so that doesn't help matters any, even though its not a rough area...
