Hi guys... i wanted to get one of these short ram systems from cosmo...

but according to some guy at the local auto shop, he told me not to waste my time as the intake would still be sucking in hot air produced by the engine and might even lower performance. Is this true? So, should i replace my stock air box with a pod filter one? Oh by the way, is that black hole in the second picture the hole for the oxygen sensor?

yep

however, before buying it ill warn you...i got one for my 97 paseo (and si did as well) and they didnt not fit. its cause the american cars and uk spec cars are slightly different...american cars have different emissions regulations so on my filter there was one fitting too many and the air/temp sensor would not fit in the hole.

now about the hot air. well to be honest, yes, it will draw in hot air from the very nature of where its drawing the air from. with the standard 'seo you've got the whole assembly that takes air from the front of the car (from a low pressure area under the hood) and takes it directly to the air box. now even though the assembly does get close to the engine, it takes air from a cold source hence will not be affected TOO much. a short ram intake however, will take air from just behind the Battery, which is quite close to the engine...and since you have to take away the plastic assembly, that is all your gonna get....hot air.

unlike popular belief (i.e. boyracers) sticking on a pod or short ram intake in most cases WONT improve power due to the aforementioned fact of the hot air being drawn in...they only THINK it does cause it sounds "racier". however, its been long agreed in professional fields that usually swapping out the normal panel filter with a freer flowing one is a lot more beneficial. and also you get the PROFESSIONAL (i.e. not those stupid pipercross and green direct ones) aftermarket closed (or ram-air) systems that effectively replace a stock airbox (+ cold air assembly) with a larger diameter assembly, incorporating some method of blocking heat. these are usually expensive but its effective, its why when you see race cars or whatever that they dont have some pod filter or short ram just stuck on there.

additionally, you could get a cold air system and route it so that you keep as far away from any heat source as possible (you'd most likely need to relocate the Battery to the boot) and then place the filter in an area with cold dense air, like deep in the front bumper. and to settle your mind from hydro-lock, you stick a bypass valve in the middle of the tubing....

either way, short ram's usually dont increase power because as said, they drawn in hot air...which is less dense, hence less fuel is injected into the cylinders hence less power is produced....i was gonna add more but my fingers are tired

hi riko. thanks for the advice. I really appreciate it (all that typing!) hehe..

well, i have a friend who suggested that i should get a custom made aluminium pipe, which is shorter and that should let me leave the stock assembly (which draws air from the front of the car) on. Thus the pod filter would still have some cold air coming in from the front of the engine.

I am going to check it out and see if it is possible to get a custom made pipe that will route the air intake to some place behind the bumper...

once again, thanks man! ;)

no problem mate

one idea i just came up with, is to modify the existing one...so get rid of the panel filter and put a cone filter or something in the box, then try to enlarge the entry / outlets into the box, and just enlarge the piping of the plastic air assembly, then i dunno, change the throttlebody pipe to an aluminum one or something, so that you'd have all the stock fittings there and whatever...ive got so many ideas for this....buts its gonna be custom :<

oh yeah, also, did you know that if you drive with your airbox unclipped the paseo actually kinda roars a bit :)...kinda nice :)....kinda damaging to the filter, but nice :)
