Mr2 Turbo - Thoughts And Questions

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hi, as you may have read in previous posts I am considering getting an MR2 turbo. Unfortunately due to the swings and roundabouts of being married, getting "approval" is taking longer than expected, and my finance is not getting released until later on this summer.

So I have had some time to gather my thoughts and think more about what I want, and what to get.

Basically I have come to the conclusion that a Rev 3 MY94 onwards car is the way foreward (due to the improvements made to the design in Rev3 and the extra power). I also think that getting one imported specially for me is a very good idea. And here I have some thoughts...

I want a car in a nice colour, and in order to get my fav (Caribean Blue) it appears to cost a lot more - so I am considering that for much the same price, I could get a black or white one resprayed for about £1K, or with a flip for £1400. - A complete new coat of paint, instead of getting one that may have 10 year old (and show it) paintwork.

As far as importers go it looks like it will either be Home Run - as I bought my current G-Ltd from him, and he can pretty much get one to order for me... or Japanese Direct Imports - had a long chat with the guy on the phone, and he sold himself very well! Currently I am leaning towards JDI.

Does £5,500-6,000 for a black, hard top rev 3, unmodified with a 50K mileage sound reasonable - hopefully one with shoddy paint will be cheaper in the auction (so long as it's not poor crash repair)? I maybe a bit low there for the price.

Now, tuning, I read somewhere that there are some very cheap power hikes on these and as well as zorsts and filters? I would love to hit near 300ps at the flywheel... I heard about a £1.50 20bhp trick, but I assume it's an old wives tail... (but may try to get hold of the guy to find out what he did) ... Is there a higher boost chip available for the GSGTE? SOmething to jog it up a couple of PSi safely with a remap? Or is the Unichip the only *real option*?

Any comments on any of the above?

Definatley have a look at DAIE Motors ( click here for website ), a very reputable and trusted importer amongst the MR2 community,I've just had a look on their website which is under construction and unfortunately not much on their at the moment.

If you give them a call and tell them what you want, colour, model, budget etc... they'll find it for you...

Buying at auction is very dodgy as there are a lot of dog's out there, be very careful when buying your two as if you buy a dog your in for a long and expensive ride, buy a good one, look after it and you'll have years of giggling :)

Plenty ogf options with chips although Unichip tends to be the more tried and tested common version but very good results, mongoose is a common exhaust upgrade and the look great (photo's available if required), induction kits, actually everything is available for the mr2 it's a very modifiable car.....

Happy hunting

tuning wise a filter, exhaust and chip should see at least 280bhp. can just use a boost controller to run 18psi if you want and that should give about 270-280bhp.

add water injection and 300bhp should be achieved or near enough.
