take it out of the gear box if its cable and spin the cable by hand , have someone look at the speedo to make sure its moving , spray some wd40 down inside or 3 in 1 oil if it feels stiff untill it frees.if its a digital 1 then thats a new ball game.

on the top of the gear box there will be a cable .. this shoots off to your speedo.

On the Rev1's its a physical spinny wire .. on the rev2's it's a few power cables ..

What year is your car?

its a G reg 1990, so i guess a rev 1....

That will be mechanical then, the spinny wire as Bibbs said..

The cable spins from the final drive that is in the gearbox, the spinning cable drives the needle on your speedo.

On the later electric type ones the final drive is converted into a pulse that drives the speedo.

check the gear box end first, if it doesnt turn there then get new cable. but rather than strip old cable just feed internals of new cable through old sheating, saves you LOADS of messing around.

could also be that cable is loose behind clocks for some reason or another, i know of people that remove them to stop miles clocking up.
