Toyota 'l' Diesel Engine In My '84 Hiace

Hello

Just picked up an old 1984 Hiace modified to carry 6 passengers. It is fitted with the 'L' motor (2195 cc) which is supposed to develop about 66 hp apparently - although I could swear half of the horses are dead

Anyone got any ideas where I could get info on maintaining the unit. It's only done 113000km - that's about 75000 miles in real currency! The T-Belt light is on on the dashboard. One quick question: how does the engine know that the timing belt needs to be replaced? There doesn't seem to be an onboard computer...

Also, it seems to have undergone a minor modification. The automatic glowplug must have given up the ghost a while back, because there is a sprung push button now residing behind the ignition key (on the RIGHT of the steering column) which I have to depress for anything between 5 - 15 seconds depending on the temp. I would like to get the original mechanism running again. Another quick question - how does the automatic glowplug know how long to stay on for - is it just a simple thermostat linked to the temperature of the cyliner heads, or is it a more complicated timer algorithm related to ambient air temperature.

Your input would be most welcome!

Thank you

WS

Thanks for your interest in helping. I'm pretty sure that Haynes don't do it for the particular years that this model with this engine was in production.

Cheers

Timing belt light is linked to the speedo and to reset it,there is a blanking plug on the instrument panel face, take this out and useing a long thin screwdriver - press the button in below the blanking plug.

The Glow plugs are controlled by Timer relay which normally goes wrong.

If you PM me your model code - I will photocopy the Service Data Sheet for the Hiace.
