Changing Power Steering On An E10

Lo all,

I've got the 1.3 1993 3door E10 and the steering is a bit 'light', the back end steps out quite easily and the (steering) wheel goes very loose after a certian degree of turn making cornering at speed difficult. I have already lowered the car (40mm springs and shocks) so please don't suggest that.

I've read that the early CTS had a similar problem so maybe Toyota just can't do PAS but correct me if I'm wrong.

A mate of mine has said that changing the PAS is quite easy but I was wondering what others on these boards have done. Do you just put up with it or is there alternatives.

Are there other versions of the Corolla that have better/uprated PAS? I have heard that my model was one of the first PAS cars and I would have thought that like all new technology updates come out quite fast.

Cheers for any info or advice.

I've heard reports about E11s having improved steering feel in Europe, but I can neither confirm nor rebute that. The only non-US model Corolla I have driven was a New Zealand model. The NZ model's PAS feel and weight was brilliant, but in my experience, the PAS in the ZZE110 models that followed the AE101 and AE102 here do not measure up to my E10. On a side note, putting on 195/60HR14 tyres with a much more aggressive tread pattern has resulted in a quite numb on-centre feel at motorway speeds.

If thats the case I won't bother all these ideas seem like too much hassle and expense.

Cheers

Even more exotic was the vehicle speed sensitive variable assist steering that came on some of the Japanese E10s! Now THAT would be nightmarish to do.
