Help

I have a 96 Surf (KZN185) Automatic....How does the FWD (ADD) dashboard light work.

If I have the car in park and press the button on the transfer box - (its set in 4H-2H) then the dash indicator lights up showing all four wheels locked ( 4 steady green lights ) If I switch it off then the lights go out. The 4WD locks in OK - I can hear it and feel the change in driving.

If I am driving and press the button then the indicator starts flashing with an additional orange light in the middle. Four wheel drive locks in OK ( I can feel it) but the indicator light will only go off (from flashing) if I swith the button off and stop the vehicle. I've noticed that I have to reverse for 10 yds or so to get it to release.

Is this right?

Can anyone help me with a fax from the owners manual that tells me how the ADD works. Call me on 07990 665339 if you want. I need to get this sorted ASAP

Im not sure if the newer Surfs had a centre diff but the older ones dont so you should never be put in 4WD whilst on the hard stuff (tarmac, concrete ect ect) what happens if yoy do is called transmission whind up and and it will break something.

4WD should only be used in on the slippy stuff and engaged when the car is at rest.

I think the reason the light is flashing is ita a warning basicly warning you that it cannot engage as you are moving.

Not a direct answer but it may help. My old Mk1 rav had a diff lock and if used that would take a while for it to disengage. According to the manual, uneven tyre wear plays a big part in how long it takes for it to unlock and does suggest short runs backwards and forwards to help it on its way.

If I also remember rightly, you should do no more than 40mph with the diff locked and only for short distances.
