Hi all, i have just brought my first Toyota after a long time with Vauxhalls and

the there C20xe engine :P Very happy the the celica so far, very well built and

as smooth as anything  My last car was a Vauxhall Calibra LET Turbo, i

sold it as my mpg was killing me :ffs:

i hadn't majorly booted the Celica till last night when a marc tryed to cut me up, i

put my foot down and it was alittle slugish till it got to about 5k and it suddenly

shot off! i didn't realise thay did that! very different to the Vauxhalls. Does

it have a vvt type system or something? or is mine just f***ed

cheers

Welcome to the TOC.

That is fairly normal behaviour for a ST202 Celica, they have quite 'racey' cam profiles, and the engine makes peak power at 7k rpm.

The change at 5k rpm is due to the ACIS system switching over. See this page for a technical description:

A handful of celicas have a vvti engine, but they are very rare and were only sold in Japan.

u gotta take it right too the redline to make it shift :D

i dont notice a big shot of performance though at 5K! Its quite gradual imo

my st202 used to accellerate more around the 4000 revs range and beyond , it was'nt instant but a steady increase in power. like cooki says give it some wellie in each gear they love it.

Thats great, cheers :D have to get my head round that abit but makes sence.

I'm not one for thrashing my engines but i do race about, can't

get used to reving it that high, feels like i'm going to blow it! :o

Do these engines have any knowen leak points, like leaking sumps or cam belt

failures, weak rings?

even if the cam belt did snap chances of damage are slim , its a non interference engine

shore i'll be back soon with some more questions

oh, and while we on the engine subject :D what oils best to use in these engines?

is it 10-40w semi synth like my Vauxhall or is a higher vol fully synth better for

these? Going to give it a service asap so i know its all tip top.

you need a summer grade oil, fully synthetic, good quality 10-40 will do.

the ST202 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, twin-cam, 16 valve 3S-GE engine has a high compression ratio and produces 173bhp at 7,000rpm. Torque is 137 lb ft at 4,800 rpm, and is maintained at high revs, with a flat torque curve. Top speed is 139 mph, and 60 mph comes up in just 7.9 seconds from a standing start.

basically, what you experienced at about 5K is peak torque being maintained.

it is a very high revving motor and needs to be to get the performance out of it.

as such, with all maintained higher rpm engines, oil quality is paramount and regular checks are required.
