went on a road trip yesterday down to nottingham, (about a 2 hour drive) to pick up my mates golf mk2 gti 16v in tornado red  from his dads.....however, when i drove it it felt at least twice as fast as my car even though on the motorway back up we were dead even till around 125/130 mph :S (obviously this high mph figure is vastly over-egzagerated and we were not breaking the speed limit ;) )

can anyone offer an explanation....?

mk2 Golf GTI 16v's are crazy cars. Compare the torque curve to your own.

The 16v GTI is a highish revving engine, and makes most of its peak power at the top of the rev range.

there was hardly any speed/acceleration difference at all, it just felt it.

hence the power delivery is different.

when i bought my car i thought it felt slower than some other older cars ive had, i dont think this is down to power, i think the wind noise is a factor it sounds like your going faster your corolla is a lot better sound proofed than a golf thats at least 13yrs old (it prob was quicker as you give away a few bhp to a golf and its lighter)

Doesn't the golf have 150bhp to your 109bhp? and probably similar differences in torque. Allied to a lighter body then no wonder it felt faster.

it feels a hell of a lot faster when i drove it but when myself and josh both give it a go, its very minimal upto 125 ish, then i have to use 6th :ffs: which has buggar all pull and takes ages to get any faster, but she does

for example....1st gear very similar...2nd the golf beats me a tad and thrid i close up and then from 4th on its even

:hokus-pokus:

Is your Corolla modified engine wise Joe? If not then that's surely a very tired Golf. And I reckon your sppedo ain't too accurate but I'm told that's common.

as far as im aware its totally standard....it also pulls away from vts and vtr's no problem....

the golf certainly feels like its got a lot more balls when driving it though.

hmm, well either your car's been played with, or the golf's not running right. honestly, it should have wasted you! :P

mine's about the same to 60 as a 16v golf (golf's probably a bit quicker), and ive beaten a mk4 150bhp GTI to around 60ish by some margin, and i think they're rated at about 8.5s. so if yours is meant to take about 9.5s, well...go figure :D

your probably right as ive had easilly under 9 seconds 0-60 out of mine....i dont know...the golf is in good nick...77k on the clock, very clean under the bonnet, no signs of tremendous abuse.

im stumped.

hmmph

as regards to the speedo the golf must be out too, as we had the exact same readouts pretty much when talking after...anyway, was the best 2 1/2 hours in a car ive ever had

well....maybe not... :P

i really like the mk2 16 valvers. i was looking at one at a dealer the other day, but he wanted £1995 for it! it was a minter, but it was white, and i don't want another white car. if it had been oak green or black, i think i'd have bought it. it was the runout model with the bbs's and power steering etc :)

77k is very low for one of them

Your corolla is doing well then. I got cooked by a fiesta zetec-s who pulled away from me at over 100mph (private airfield!) Dunno if it was modified though. Gutted.
