M4 Camera Body In Revenue Row

The Camera Partnership behind the revenue-generating speed cameras on the M4 has been caught trying to rake in more money -- by charging for information on the causes of accidents on the motorway.

As soon as the M4 cameras were announced, the Association of British Drivers (ABD) approached speed camera bosses to find out what had caused the accidents that justified them. The Wiltshire and Swindon Speed Camera Partnership (WSSCP) initially told the group that they did not hold data on what causes crashes, an admission which the ABD called "astonishing", and calls into question the WSSCP's claim that the cameras were installed for safety reasons.

When the ABD pressed the point, the partnership said that it would have to search its database - and would charge £111.63 "per positive search result".

The ABD said it believed the Partnership may be deliberately trying to conceal the causes of crashes on the M4, perhaps because so few of them were due to drivers exceeding limits.

ABD road safety spokesman Mark McArthur-Christie said, "Many people are unaware that Partnerships are allowed to impose cameras no matter what the causes of accidents -- even where they have not been caused by exceeding a speed limit. But it is stunning that first they admit they don't know what causes crashes, then they try to charge £111 to reveal information that should already be in the public domain. They should have these figures at their fingertips. What are they trying to hide?"

ABD Chairman Brian Gregory said, "We've found time and again that camera partnerships will do anything to conceal the causes of crashes, because so few are down to exceeding a speed limit. It's time for the Partnerships to end their culture of secrecy and spin and just come clean. We want to see each partnership showing on their Web sites the causes of accidents that have led to cameras."

The ABD said that this shows that camera partnerships are unaccountable and running out of control. McArthur-Christie said, "The UK's road safety policy has become obsessed with speed to the detriment of everything else. Having a camera policy which runs down traffic police departments and takes no account of the causes of crashes is like abolishing the NHS and replacing it with machines in every high street that just dispense aspirin no matter what the patient's complaint, and about as effective."

Does my !Removed! head in!

The motorways are the safest place to drive in my opinion.... no kids to worry about, no schools, no pedestrians of any kind... just other crappy drivers and if you know what you're doing, they'll be far enough away from you for you to hit them.

For the amount of traffic that runs over the motorways there are a TINY amount of accidents. Speed cameras's on motorways are pure money making scam devices.

isnt this against the freedom of information act...

you should be allowed access to this information without mentioning it, i forgot the specifics and i know they can charge but i thought it had to be low and only if the data retrivel was labour intenstive incourring costs etc

I think the more worrying thing is, they claim these cameras are there because 'speeding drivers on the M4 causes accidents' and yet, they couldnt produce a single statistic to back up this claim...

Another wonderful thing brought to you by the Labour goverment (the safety camera partnership that is)

If people learned the fact that it is 'ok' to drive in the inside lane at 70mph without having to hog the middle lane.. IMHO The outer lane could be 100mph (as long as car was justified as being able to cope with these speeds) obviously not during rush hour!.. :!Removed!:

Camera's suck, the government suck, middle lane drivers suck..

the way forward is when bangers are not allowed....:D

this must get rid of 20% of cars lol

and they could update the speeds of motorways due to safe cars being on it

Forget bangers...

BAN SUV's!!!

You see, look at the highway code, look at the braking distances...

almost all modern cars can stop sooner (some 1/2 the distance) of these - infact the only cars that have similar stopping distances are the X5's, range rovers etc!

true!

I cant see the point in most of them...

some people do genuinely go off roading, but im hating the women who use it for their kids

It is, or rather, was.

Accidents on the M4 have tripled since the cameras have began operating.
