Changing The Clutch

Hi,

I got a worn out clutch on my 1.6 SR and Toyota has quoted me about £500 to get it fixed (Parts & Labour). Am I getting ripped off here?

Has anyone got their clutch changed for less?

Just bought a 3 part clutch for my MX5 for £80+vat, fitting has been quoted at £120 by an independant...

Can't see it costing £300 more for a Corolla....

Have a shop around, Toyota will be a lot more expensive than aftermarket parts, all depends on whether you want to keep the full Toyota Service History...

Don't go to a main Toyota dealer!

There is also no need as your car will not be under warranty so no need to have it done by Toyota.

A reputable non franchise garage will probably charge about £184 to £257 depanding on location/rates.

Out of curiosity what millage has your clutch gone at?

P.S. Do not take cheap route of having a so-called 're-con' clutch fitted, these have been known to burn out at 10,000 mile. Just thought I'd mention it as these seem to have resurfaced again ...shocked anyone uses them!

My corolla has only done 50k....I mainly do motorway driving. Must have been the previous owner!

Hey Phil,

I got a silver SR. I seen a black one driving around Cardiff, not sure if that's you or somebody else. Have you got the face lift version?

Do you (previous owner) drive with your foot resting on the clutch pedal. This is a common problem with M-Way drivers. The weight of your foot can be enough to depress the clutch slightly. If it's depressed ever so slightly for any lenght of time whilst driving then you'll more than likely wear into the clutch. I had the clutch on my GTI replaced when I had my gearbox recond as the previous owner (and perhaps myself a little) had rested her foot on the clutch pedal alot of the time. There was a big ring cut into the clutch plate. Once it had been replaced it was quiet as a mouse as well!

These days a Eunos Roadster, used to be Toyota's and am sure I'll be back in one asap.... If you see a blue Eunos with the roof down in all weather around Cardiff, that'll be me :D
