04 Corolla Dash Removal

I didn't find an answer in SEARCH here for this. How does the lower left (drivers, under steering colume)dash panel get romoved from a 04 corolla? I'm trying to route wires for satalite radio and don't see any screws for removal like our 2000 corolla had. Lookes to be some sort of "snap apart" but I don't want to break anything. Any help appreciated.....thanks

I'll try and remember how you do it.

1) Unscrew the gear knob (anticlockwise)

2) Pull out the gearbox cover away, move to one side

3) Pull the trim away from the gearbox surrounds.

4) The centre console comes away in one part, right up to the air vents, might need some jigging around before it comes away.

5) Underneath the air vent / audio are 4 bolts, need a ratched spanner to undo (size 10mm or 12mm I think)

6) Pull out the air vents / audio out as one, will need patience to do this, and it does come away.

Note: might be a little stuck, due to the fact it's stuck in by the air vents, but it will come away.

7) Once the unit is out, the audio is cliped in by locator holes, 3 on top/bottom, gently pull middle one and then the ends, will come out, but just take your time. Don't forget to take out the green bulb at the very bottom of the unit too.

That was my reply :lol::lol::thumbsup:

This removal process is for the centre console, rather than anywhere else on the dashboard, but at least it helps someone out there

So the head unit and air vent surround is all held in place by just 4 bolts? I might have a go at removing mine tonight (I'm looking for a rattle).

Where the air-vents are, it might creak due to movement of the car while driving.

I would say that, my air-vents creak due to movement, but also doesn't sit flush as when i first got it, i think someone told me it was a design fault, but i never followed it up, but i would of thought they would of sorted it by now...

I took my console to pieces last night, quite an easy and straightforward job.

location of the 4 bolts

I could only find the two bolts on either side so I undid them, there was also one bolt in the middle but it was set back a long way and at an awkward angle so I couldn't undo it. I have a cd changer in my car so I suspect that the bloke that fitted it might not have put it all back together properly.

After a some tugging and scratching my head I gave up on trying to get the head unit and air vent surround out of the dash and instead just concentrated on making sure the whole unit was in exactly the right position and then tightening up the two retaining bolts. Once I'd put it all back together everything looked a lot better (the gap at the top was only a few mm anyway so it wasn't exactly noticeable - now it's a perfect fit).

I also duck taped the cd changer control unit to the inside of the dash too just in case this made a difference.

The rattle seems to have gone away so I'm happy.

Something I noticed the other day, the top of the dash feels a bit spongey just above the left hand air vent like there's nothing underneath holding it together - I guess this is just part of the design.
