hi guys,

thanks for the info on the alloy wheels.

over the last month or so, my cars engine just seems to have got noisier. i have a performance exhaust fitted and before when the car was running all you could hear was the exhaust, the engine was pretty much silent, but know the engine makes as much noise as the exhaust.

there is a sort of ticking sound, which appears to be coming from under the injectors, and just generally the whole engine is noisier. there hasn't been much of of difference in the way it drives, and i service it regularly, any ideas?

by the way its a 91 corolla gti(UK car)

wear and tear ? maybe check the manifold gasket is sealed good also the join in the exhaust at the downpipe/pipe ?

with the engine running and the bonnet up check for noise coming from the air sensor in the airbox (or else where if you fitted a different filter) mine makes a loud sh sh sh sh shs sh shs hs noise like a steam engine ! at tickover

Injectors often get noisy when they're dirty, take the car to a tuning place and have them 'sonic' cleaned, it will do wonders for your driveability :)

thanks,

general wear and tear? not so sure? its been looked after well, and has only just started doin it, i had a corolla Gti before aswell with twice the mileage that was quietier, the engines alot cleaner on this one?

were can i get the injectors 'sonic' blasted? i don't know of anyplace that does that? i live in High Wycombe, just off the m40, can you recommend any place fairly nearby?

we've got a Bosch main dealer place off the back of a reputable garage that does it, unfortunately i'm down in Southend, most injector specialists will be able to clean them for you though, but the 'sonic ' cleaning is reputed to be the best method, they basically blast shock waves at the injectors till all the crud drops off, so there is no abrasion or anything to spoil them :)

thanks for the advise, i'll ask around locally to see if there is anyone nearer who does it.

i had a good look at the engine yesterday, and found a small amout of oil at the bottom of the engine block, its where the top half of the engine meets the bottom half(Silver bit meets rusty colour bit!), not sure if it was dropped when the oil was filled up, or if it genuinly leaking?

if in the worst case scenario, it does have a leak, is there anything i can do about it, fairly cheap?( you know us students are always broke!!!)

sorry for the late reply,

computers been playin up, but anyway, its not the head gasket, its lower than that, i think its were the sump joins the engine? does that have a gasket?

its going to be due a service soon, would it be worthwhile have a new gasket put in? is it expensive(that is if it has one?)

My engine (3sfe, 16v twin cam) has got noisier also, with no loss of power. It sounds a little bit dieselly or rattley, I have been told that it is 'A spring loaded adjuster gear on one of the cam shafts that is slightly misaligned' and have been quoted 2 hours labour charge. sorry to chuck in another possibility!

When they do your service they should drain the old oil, whilst the sump is empty its a 10min job to replace that gasket :)

hi, had the car serviced over the weekend.

unfortunately no change, its still noisy.

i had the sump gasket changed, the old one seemed ok.

when the engine was cold, they started it and listened to where the sound was coming from, it was quite clear that the noise was coming from two parts. the injectors (haven't had a chance to find an injector specialist yet), and from under the rocker cover.

they said that it would cost alot for them to check either of them, so i left it, as i'm currently broke.

shall i try to have a look myself?

and what should i look for? (or what should everything look like?)!

Take the rocker covers off and turn the engine over by hand (spanner on the bottom pulley wheel) and look for a sticky valve, take your time and also grip each one individually and give it a little wiggle side to side, depending on whether the valve is open or closed there will be some play but not much barely visible but should be audible by a tiny click, but never as much as 1mm play in any state.

Things to check are valves, stems, guides and more importantly look for dry areas or heat affected areas, you may have a blocked oil gallery.

if you can find a Bosch automotive specialist they can check, clean your valves. my mate had his vales ultrasonically ( )cleaned about £8 per valve.
