hi ,dont know about the toyota ,but some jap cars use the cut part of the key as an aerial in order to comunicate with the ecu ,the reciver is usually mounted in the barrel mechanism of the lock but transmission ranges do vary from car to car .the wifes astra wouldent even accept the chip fixed into a new cut key so i think it might be suck it and see,if you split the key, the transponder is about 1 cm x 1cm x 3 mm and located near the cut part of the key. sometime though they fix the transponder into position with glue or a setting gel and they can be a pain to get out ,not a lot of info but it might help

Use your valet key and tie with tie clips around the ignition barrel. The cowling will still hide the key. Get bog standard keys cut and the jobs a good one....

you'll find the trasponder arial arounfd the ignition barrell, as for the transponder part of the key, it's a small chip or coil of wire.... take ya shroud off the steering column and stick/tie it under there, also thats how they do the remote starting devices from clifford :D

Can Beardie & Mackers explain this a bit further exactly what you are doing ?

one of my keys is in my steering column, the metal part of the key i've broken off so it can't be used and i have installed the CLIFFORD INTELLISTART system, so i can remote start me car (handy for winter time)

Alarm remotes will need to be got from other cars and can be reprogrammed by TGB. They'll charge you for a 1/2hr . Scour the breakers as the key plips are no use on scrapped cars!
