Or - you could just not post if you have nothing useful to contribute

I thought files shown as green in explorer were encrypted?

if so - and you've re-installed windows, you may want to sit down.  :(

when you encrpyt a file using XP, it uses your personal security certificate to encrpyt it.

if you change user, or re-install windows etc  -then the file will be locked, and unrecoverable.

This is not a bug or a flaw - you have deliberately setup the file so that only the original user who encrypted the file may subsequently decrpyt it

:(

Beat me to it! Sorry matey, but it's a gonner! Give Bill Gates a ring... im sure he can help!

Why were they hidden in the 1st place? Hidden files serve 2 purposes as far as i'm concerned...

1) Teenager hiding porno on mummy's pc.

2) College IT technician hiding files from :censor: hole students who think they are the Dog's but aint.

Have you tried putting the 2nd hard drive into another PC and accessing the files, or copying them off the drive onto another machine over a network or something? Also, you might want to get a copy of SLAX (linux which boots from cd) and use it to get at the files as it has an NTFS plugin. That's what i used at work when i had fallings out with a staff laptop and the permissions went screwy!

Also, did you have any encryption software running on your PC before you formatted? Or maybe some internet protection software that you maybe haven't reinstalled? I get the same problem at work when students have flash drives with encryption software on and don't know how to use it... I'm sure the filenames go green in that instance too...

Just a thought.

ah yes the joys of NTFS.

I can't be ubikd to read any of the links.

select the file/folder, right click and select "properties"

at the botton you will have "attributes" in this section of the box you will have 2 check boxes "Read only" and "Hidden" you will also have a button called "advanced"

click on advanced.

from here check and see if that check box "encrypt contents to secure data"

if it is then deselect it. (there is a button next to this box titled "details" if the box is checked then you can access this button, it allows you to take ownership of files and a few other things that I can't remeber of the top of my head)

As the file/folder titles are green it means that they are encrypted.

If the check box is not selected then I don't know :)

While you're there you might think about getting a Linux distro like Slackware or Fedora Core 2 and just forgetting Windows on your PC altogether.
