Bye Bye Yaris?

ok... this might sound strange but I'm really tempted to trade in my '02 Yaris TS for a '92 Renault Clio...

the reason why I'm tempted is:

tuned 1.8 16v 186hp engine, LSD, racing copper clutch & racing dogbox, custom Bilstein racing suspension, custom exhaust, fiber hood & front fenders, Sparcco rollcage, Sparcco seats & steering wheel. The car was completelly rebuilt '02-'03 using only top quality components and has since only been driven 25.000km. It's also ready for a paint job and I get to choose the color...

what do you think? should I go for it?

I know it's a '92 clio... but man... with that power/weight ratio I think this is a really fun car...

I went the other way.....Clio to a Yaris.....and have never regretted it

Renault = rattles, unreliability and (in the UK) poor dealer aftercare

Stick with Toyota................you will not regret it

I think that could be great fun.

If I were you I'd make the decision based on your needs first though. If you do a fair amount of driving every day/week and put a lot of miles on your car then you may want to think against it. The Yaris will be more reliable and use less fuel.

If you do not have to drive quite so much, say a fair bit under 15000 km a year and you value driving performance over reliability anyway and love the car enough to be willing to spend a little to keep it running well, then go for it!

If your actually planning on taking it on a track or really driving it hard as a hobby then it's worth it but I think as a daily driver, point A to B machine, the Yaris is a much more logical choice.

keep the yaris! I'd only buy another french car if it was seriously quick and new or else a "2nd car". My clio was ful of problems but i did love it.

Hahaha, not as bad as the Renault 5 Campus, which you needed a master's degree in mechanical engineering to find the oil filter...

Personally i wouldn't evey buy a clio because they are mounted on Jelly suspension, and they are french. Not my cup of tea regardless of the engine.

I'll be a Toyota owner and proud for a while now!

Your call mate

Nooooooooooo stay with a Yaris!

The CLio has got a lot of stuff on it, I admit - but it's a YARIS that you wanna leave!! How could you!

Well I've gotta admit that Clio will be one seriously fast bit of kit. What's its history? Competition? Full rebuild too, eh?

I like new cars, newer the better and all the toys like computers, etc. but if you really want it, go for it mate!

Your decision - go drive and see what you think!

honestly - a '92 renault, be prepared for issues... the missues had a '96 Clio for a while, and that really seemed 'old techonlogy' and had a lot of niggles and small issues.

and no offence, but it sounds like it has been ragged quite a bit, so you could be in for some expensive repair work in the near future...

But it would be fun...

Would certainly be a fun litle go kart! One of my mates progressed from a 1.4 S to a 16 valver and it was rapid! Slapped on some coilovers and a half cage and it was a go-kart. 138 bhp standard (I think) and it did move! He now has a 172 and loves it to bits too. Suppose he is a Renault man at heart.

Its down to what you want to do with the car, it would be fun but may have some reliability issues. Save for a supercharger!

The answers on the forum may obviously be a little biased! :D

Sounds like it could be fun to drive and would give you the power you might be craving... can you afford the upkeep / maintenance / repairs that an older car with mods may require? Are you prepared to get your hands greasy and spend time under the bonnet? Is it a safe enough car for the power?

If yes, then go for it if you really want it! The other option is to start upgrading the Yaris I guess.

Hehe not mine - I was sooo chuffed when I checked.

I see people are very attached to the Yaris... :)

the Clio was designed and built with competition in mind so it's supposed to be a very serious and well built car... I'll take it for a spin next week(have no time for it now) and see what it can do :)

I was considering of supercharging the Yaris but after doing some calculations I decided it was to expensive... I would rather do an engine swap - would cost me the same...

Can't get clearer than that!

For the money that this seems it's going to be.... a Celica GT4 would be much nicer! £4500 over here for a decent one with no mods and around 50k miles. Plus, that's newer, more reliable and with only a couple of mods will be better handling and faster! Even standard it probably is!

Noooooooooooooooooo! Don't do it!

I had two 1.8 Clio's (1993 and 1997) and they both died on me. Renault garages haven't got a clue how to fix them either. Oh, and because it's a big engine fitted into a little car, when (definitely not 'if'!) things go wrong, they take ages to fix and end up costing a fortune.

When they were running, they were great little cars, but I really regret buying them (took me 2 to realise the error of my ways though!) - I'm much happier with my 1.3 Yaris (even though I might have to sell it....)

Once again, we agree completely on something. :o ;)

Clios are generally quite un-reliable to start with... Start bolting on stuff its going to get much worse for two reasons.... 1: It's inevitable really, just consider that much power on such an old car..

2: I don't think that with a car thats had all that done to it, the owner has just been taking it on weekend trips to tesco.....

Possible shagged or very near to it...

Stick with the !Removed!
