Hi, i have a 95 Celica GT. Im considering selling it in a few months and getting a MR2 GTS, i was going to get the MR2 GT originally, but i was been to thoughtful of other people needing lifts, but now i have decided they have there own cars, they can drive there lazy selves :). i will be getting my 2nd year no claim in a few months and a GTS will be alot cheaper. But....

I have a few questions.

1. what type of space is there?

2. Do these have the knocking problem Celicas have on the suspension.

3. What are these like for petrol consumption if you stay off the turbo.

4. Finally the main reason for the change is that i want something that feels fast and not only is fast. After along time of owning these do you people still feel the power.

5. How much can i expect to pay for a good one. I know 95 Celica GT's are around 4k with 90-100k miles.

Im sure i have a few more questions, but i cant remember at the mo.

Cheers for any input.

Oh yeah, maybe a stupid question, but what are these like in snow, my Celica was scary.

As for #4, there are very few cars which you will not get used to the performance.. and while a MR2 Turbo will never 'feel slow', it will never feel as fast as the first few weeks, and the problem is probably more apparant in a N/A.

From what I know (and just wait for the '2' boys to correct me) space is okay - you have a little room under the bonnet, and a reasonable boot, with space behind the seats and lots of compartments etc...

thats ok, i got used to the N/A in no time at all, bit boring really.

Forgot to add, it would be the rev3 i would be after.

Cheers for a super quick response :)

1: Not to bad but you dont buy a 2 seater sports car and expect space??

2:Would say its worth uprating the suspension anyway

3:Dont ask.... I am lucky if i can get 20 mpg it seems to make little difference how i drive the car... but again why buy a sports car and be worried about fuel consumption

4:They are very fast 0-60 is early-mid 5's i believe and they just pull and pull and pull. As for do they still feel fast after owning for a whiule.... does any car?

5:Anything from £3,500 upwards. Worth paying out for a good one though

1. what type of space is there?

Ive managed to get 5 shopping bags full of food from the supermarket into the boot. (even if it was a bit of a squash!

2. Do these have the knocking problem Celicas have on the suspension.

not sure on this.. i think they might have.. i'll leave someone else to answer that one

3. What are these like for petrol consumption if you stay off the turbo.

as stated above, Im lucky to get about 21mpg on my car but that is mixed driving in the city. On the mways at crusin speed they aint too bad. On a full tank i have managed to get 275miles. Bradford to Brighton crusin about 80mph.

4. Finally the main reason for the change is that i want something that feels fast and not only is fast. After along time of owning these do you people still feel the power.

in a straight line, you get used to it.. but it took a long time for the smile to go off my face! On the bends its a different matter! Just the thought in your head knowing that if you plant your foot down mid corner in 2nd gear in boost your going to break traction is a wicked feeling!(most times  ) and after a year of owning the car.. i still love that aspect of it!

5. How much can i expect to pay for a good one. I know 95 Celica GT's are around 4k with 90-100k miles.

depends on colour.. milage.. mods.. etc etc.. anywhere between say £4k to ££6.5k for a good condition Rev 3

Oh yeah, maybe a stupid question, but what are these like in snow, my Celica was scary.

Forget the snow bud.. its bad enough in the wet! Drive like miss daisy and you will be fine...

Hope that has been of some use to ya..

Cheers for the response.

Im not to bothered about petrol consumption, i was just hoping you might get about 30mpg if you take it easy as i do a fair few miles. My GT i can get 34 if i take it easy, 30 if not so easy. What would happen if you turn the boost down lower than stock :)

As for space, not to bothered, i presume in that case there is not room under the bonnet.

The only problem i would have is the roads to work is alot up and down hill and in winter aint nice. Also this is not good on petrol :(.

But from you have said and others sources have said, the GTS is a fun car, and really looking at it, as said above all sports cars are going to have low MPG and generally not good in snow.

I wouldn't say the mr2 is bad in the snow, I would say it is a definate no no !!

I've crashed twice. Once in the wet and once in the dry.

Driven upto edinburgh once in the snow. The roads had been cleared, although still snowing. Went to overtake a car on a straight. (very slowly with minimal acceleration) and the car just slid across the road, thought I was gonna end up in a ditch on the other side!!

Snow = no mr2

Bunch o' wusses!

There is nothing wrong with a turbo two in ANY weather as long as you remember that you have a bunch of power under your foot. Treat the car with respect and remember that the throttle is an analogue device and not off/on digital and you'll be fine.

People spin because they forget what they are driving and give it the old front wheel drive 'foot down and pull me 'round' action. Lack of attention is the main reason for trashing a two.

My missus pulled off the M1 a junction early so she could enjoy the turbo in the snow - if you know what you are doing it's a lot of fun.

You need to be sensitive to what the car is doing and not just give it large all of the time. Keep it smooth and you'll keep it on the road no problem.

Fuel economy? Had it as high as 32mpg and as low as 17.

32mpg!!!!! thats a distant dream for me lol

Can get mid 20's on a run

cheers Stef, i was getting abit worried about the mr2, can ya fit anything under the bonnet. I like the sound of the 32 mpg, i get about 34mpg if im very sensible on my gt, so 30mpg would be nice if it was pos on the mr2 turbo.

Cheers for the responise's, im getting more and more convinced :)

To be honest, if petrol is a concern, I'd give the MR2 a miss.

You'd only get reasonable mileage in a stock 2 if you were driving pretty sedately.

You will get the MR2 boost addiction... which will instantly take your fuel consumption right down to early teens.

Get yourself a Yaris if you want good fuel consumption!!! ;) :P

Forget about the cost of fuel bills... it'll all be run out within the next 7-10 years anyway, so make the most of it!!!

Sorry if it's just **** on your parade.

thats what im after, something that will give late 20's if i drive sensibly on a motorway, but damn good fun if i decide to give it some right foot action :)

I hope you get one, and I hope... I know you'll enjoy it!

In a few months you will be buying in winter... not a good time to learn how to drive a 245bhp mid engine RWD car mate..

i was origionally looking for a turbo but after months of looking for a decent one within my budget i gave up and settled for a no turbo on a 92 j plate in white.

Having dribing the turbo i must say the power difference is noticable above 3.5k revvs especially but to be honest if you want better fuel get a non turbo. Still quick at about 6.9secs - £173bhp i believe. Not get me wrong id love a turbo, but finding one for under3.5k was a different story. BTW, i got a UK spec with only 57k miles on it. To good an opportunity to miss. It still blows s***te out of the good old boy racers in there tin cans....LOL

lol, that is a very good point, i did think about it. I have a celcia GT at the mo, it is fast, but just does not feel it. It was said on the Parkers guide for the Celica Review that it fails to stir the soul, they are damn right. My 1.7 Renault 5 was more fun, prob because handling was no way as easy as the Celica, suppose the MR2 GT would be fun though. I do about 14000 miles a year, so mileage was putting me off mainly, if 30Mpg was possible if taking it easy then i would be happy.

Also what is under the bonnet?

spare tyre.. Battery.. tool kit.. clutch and brake fluid entry and also the washer bottle.. and abs unit etc if the car has it...

If you want 30Mpg... stick to the N/A as its the same engine as the Celica but because the MR2 is lighter.. its quicker and also you will get the RWD fun..:thumbsup:

man you are quick :)

So no room for anything under the bonnet?

I want the gut renching feel of a turbo :) and not bad mileage :) but then again no turbo cars really have a good MPG. Could just stick to 56Mph :) Save some juice and then prob use the juice ive saved and alot more blowing someone away that was annoying me because i was only doing 56mph, so prob not a good idea :) The thing is i wont be doing as much mileage this year as of september.

Reaction speeds increase when owning a tubby.. lol

there is enough room for a gym bag but thats about it.. and you cant put anything delicate in there either.. lol

all this talk of 30mpg from tubby owners makes me laugh.. i can no way on this earth get anywhere near that figure!

Again.. if you want MPG with a bit of poke.. get the N/A..

Best time to buy a T-bar though as you can bargain the price down more, no-one takes the roof off in winter unless they're nuts!!
