Aygo

I've been reading quite a bit in the motoring press abou the Aygo at the moment and I'm astounded at how well its being received. I've read reports in French magazine L'Auto-Journal, Top Gear and, this evening, Autocar.

All of them have praised the engine, ingenuity and handling with only a couple of minor gripes about the quality of a few interior plastics (where have we Yaris owners heard that before...). It seems to be the simplicity of the whole thing that is blowing the socks off reviewers used to driving the higest spec' on offer. The Top Gear tester even complained that his trial car was fitted with electric windows and that this was "...the one piece of over-spec on our test car".

Highest praise of the 3 has to be Steve Cropley's couple of hundred words in his weekly Autocar column, here are some of the highlights:

Its a very long time since I've enjoyed a new car as much as the Toyota Aygo, my weekend transport. Its the most absorbing little car, brilliant in a myriad of respects (engine, gearbox, design, quality, refinement, economy) but with the refreshing virtue of having obvious foibles (gearing, low speed ride). I like foibles, in moderation. Troughs make the peaks look higher.
For smoothness, response and sound effects, the engine could have been built by Ferrari, except that its a 1.0-litre, 67bhp triple

Hers's my favourite...

Best of all is the way the Aygo makes you feel. Cheerful. Amused. Optimistic for the future of cars because it achieves so much with so little. No economy car since the sainted Deux Chevaux has more eloquently shown that the true enthusiast's car need not be rare, expensive or powerful.

So, it seems to be pretty good then! I'm certainly looking forward to my first drive of one

ps.. Any typos or errors in the quotations are certainly mine ;)

pps... There's a video of the Aygo on the Autocar website

Well I think they are brilliant little cars - not even seen one in the flesh!

I may even ring Suzanne to test drive - I doubt I would buy one as I want new Yaris, but I'd really like to test drive one - just to see what everyone raves about!

The Aygo still graces my pooter desktop too!

Ooh yeah good reviews - I'm getting more used to them now, but still love the Yaris more than any other car (yes I freely admit it :P) wouldnt mind a test drive either just for the sake of it when it's released :D

I like 'em.

I just want to see A 1.3 version!

Unlikely to happen

The Aygo is a small car with a 3 cylinder 998 c.c. engine in all versions including the sport.

You'll be pleased to know that it is being released later in the year with the Toyota 1.4 D4D engine.

Yes, there's a lot more information on it now and Toyota's own site for the little car is worth a look.

Aygo

That carbon quartz is a nice colour...

As a city car, what's not to like?

The 'Sport' versions usually come out some time after the main models...

I think they're all coming out together on this one. I was also told by a man at my Mr T that Toyota don't do that "bring the Sport out later" thing anymore. He expected the T Sport version (or whatever they're going to call it) of the new Yaris to also be released at the same time as the other models.

Is it a 1.4 or a smaller diesel?

A 1.4 diesel Aygo would be quick. The 1.4 diesel Yaris is less than 1 second slower to 60 than a 1.3 gas Yaris. Depending on what the Aygo weighs vs. a Yaris, it could be a little rocket and t-diesels are easy to modify for real gains.

Its a PSA developed diesel and yes, its a 1.4. Personally, though the 1.0 triple sounds fantastic and is ultra-economical. Doubtless it will be cheaper too so on this occasion I would probably stick to the petrol.

The actual car has been developed almost solely by Toyota, with PSA group using their experience in sourcing parts cheaply in Europe to help drive the cost down.

The forthcoming Citroen C1 and Peugeot (I forget the number... 108?) will be the same car with different fronts and rears.

Yayyyyyy! :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I really do like that Carbon Quartz Colour - it really suits the car....

I'm a bit disappointed there's only three colours in the palette though - where the hell is Carlo Blue??

hi

i believe from what i have read that the diesel engine is a 1.4 PSA Citroen peugeot engine detuned from 79bhp to 54bhp approx and the petrol is sourced from diahatsu the same that is in the sirion.

the other models should have the diesel from launch...and more standard feature's

have you not seen the 1007 Em?

I think it will become the class leader very quickly... those sliding doors might seem like a gimmick - and they are - but they also are very useful and practical.. and i can see them catching on...

;)

Have you seen the price of it????!!!!!

Base model: £10,800!!!!

That's crazy money for such a teeny car that has a low powered engine, is very heavy, rides poorly, has poor handling, poor refinement and mediocre equipment. The doors are the only thing that will make up the sales.

I see.

So you've test driven it, have you?

The Aygo is featured in this months IF - I think it looks cute!

I don't think I'd ever buy one though.

I agree - its a cute small car, but if anything I'd go bigger, not smaller! Hopefully New Yaris will be a tiny bit bigger than current Yaris - enough room for baby seats (in future!) & cat carriers (at present!)!
