Rusty Wheel Nuts

Just washed the car. New in March and already there is rust on 4 of the 12 "steel" nuts.

This happened on my previous Avensis and on the Carina I finished up buying a complete set of replacements and dunking them in grease before putting them on.

Is this a common problem or am I just unlucky? :crybaby:

Does anybody know a cure or a replacement option - please. :)

I've got rusty nuts too. Off to the dealers with you for a warranty replacement. The only cure for me is to spray them with WD40 from new, after every wash, more in winter. Works on my bikes too....

Yup, bit of rust on my wheel nuts too, I also spray them with WD40, alternatively give them a good polish with Solvol Autosol that keeps surface rust at bay for a long time if treated regularly.

Happened on my Lex and the RAV ones have gone white and furry - not chrome to start with I think - and probably killed by the wheel cleaner the garage used (ex-demo car) ...

Guess it's a Toyota trait.

  • 1 year later...

What is it with the rusty wheel nuts, I've seen many cars on dealer forecourts with corrosion on, but especially the wheel lock nut, that must be made from pure iron?

Surely this could rust the thread into place and refuse to budge when trying to remove it? Alloy wheel locknuts are quite tricky to remove at the best of times with their deliberately compromised grip due to the 'key' design (to prevent theft)

My other cars have never rusted this badly on the wheel nuts, even my 13 year old Audi 90, which had a light dusting of white since I think they were made of aluminium.

Ouch! You have to make sure to dry yourself when you get out of the shower :P

Just had 9-month-old alloys replaced by Toyota (paint bubbling), along with rusty locking wheel nuts. The locking wheel nuts have been replaced with a different type which has a chrome? sleeve over it, so should look good for years to come.

The actual wheel nuts are all covered in rust though, and it will cost in excess of £70 to replace them

Hope they don't cost you 70 quid. :o They ought to be under warranty, mine were.

I asked one dealer, and they said they would have to charge me?

Car about 2 years old - maybe I have to ask another dealer.
