The valve lifter is the unit that makes contact with the valve stem and the camshaft. It rides on the camshaft. When the cam lobes push it upwards, it opens the valve... the problem is when the engine is cool and i start the engine i hear a sound,, when the engine is hot, the sound dissapear.. they say when the lifters are hidraulics the problem is the lifters are old.. BUT MY MECHANIC TOLD ME A 4e ENGiNE DON T HAVE THESE LIFTERS...?!!?.. WHAT DO U THINK..?

PD sorry again my english sucks!.. writing from lima-peru south america

The 4E-FTE has a shim bucket between valve tip and camshaft, with a replacable shim that the camshaft acts on. The shims are available in lots of thicknesses which are swapped to give the correct valve clearances.

They are not hydraulic. Check the valve clearances and replace the shims with the correct thickness for each valve (all 16 of them) to get the correct valve clearances.

how easyi s it to re-shim all the valves? is it just a case of removing the cam cover? if so then ill check them all when my cover comes off to be cleaned up and polished.

To check the valve clearances you just need some feeler gauges.

To swap them over you need a special tool to hold down the valve bucket and then use a little screwdriver to lift out the shim which you then replace with one of the correct thickness. Obviously a Toyota specialist will have a stock of each thickness of shim.

Apologies for reviving such a old thread, but I am trying to identify the tool required for this task.

I have a 2004 Avensis D-4D (1CD-FTV .. I think) ... with all the resources of on-line tool shops (and of course ebay), can anyone help me identify such a tool, o even know where I can one. My searches have found several, but I cannot be certain they are suitable.

Search for tool lists at toyota tech. They are free to download. Then you will find the special tools required to different engines, gearboxex, car models. I am at work right now. I might have a modern tool list in my own computer.
