Gear Box Noise Avensis Estate R Reg

i have a noise when in 4th or 5th gear that sounds like a hammer drill in the gear box i think ? ,the noise goes when i depress the clutch peddle.any ideas what this could be. the car drives fine and pulls and accelerates as usual,i will be towing a caravan to cheddar from stockport end of may . and how to get a toyota garage to have a test drive without incurring any costs...Roy

Some late Carina E and early Avensis have been known to have 4/5th gear problems with the car dropping out of gear. Usual cost of strip and replace a gear is £300-£400 at Toyota. Best bet is get a 2nd hand box at £75 and get fitted at an independant

Hi ,had the same problem on my 1.8 se 2000 x reg model .turned out to be the gear selector ,had it changed under warranty ,but found out its a common problem on the mk 1 avensis. the gear box didnt need to be removed ,just the end housing ,as far as i could make out ,from the guy who did the repaair ,it needed a bearing replacing to cure the selector problem,he said apart from this bearing the gear box is bullit proof ,hope this helps

I had same problem last year and Toyota garages quoted £1k without fitting!

Went to an independant who changed the 3rd gear and it cost £705

my car is going into tameside transmissions tomorrow ,replace bearings in gearbox £370.00 inc vat will take 2 day`s .
