what he meant was what you answered in the second part, as in a vitz would run on 98 and a yaris would run on 95 so in other words import cars from japan should be run on 98 ron

Cars are generally tuned for the market they are going to

as in sold new,then true

Ah.. OK I agree with that then. If the car is a grey market import direct from Japan, not purchased from a Toyota dealer in the UK.

Either way, follow Toyota's recommendation for the model in question.

Have I read this before??? - Yes!

And i answered the same before.....

am using BP ultimate now, am getting better exhaust note when warm and an extra 30 or more miles from a full tank. Only costs £2.50 extra or so for a full tank. which i still have not calculated if bettter for me economically.

If you don't like the thought of using 97 / 98 or 100 RON fuel then just don't....

or try it and then give us your feedback.

Everybody has a different opinion on this and everybody always will.

It cant hurt to try it once and either be converted to using it always or never using it again. Or never trying it in the 1st place - Your call.

Rant Over!

Thank you :)

Some people are converts, some arent!

Like I've said before, and will continue to say it lasts longer..and for me I like that..even if it does cost a little bit extra ;)

This has all been discussed before .........when my local Sainsburys was selling the higher octane fuel for the same price as standard and I treated my Yaris to a tankful.

I found that it was more economical and smoother...........but..............maybe it was just my imagination.

As it did not cost me any more, it did not matter. :)

Some helpful linkies...

WHAT KIND OF FUEL AM I? -- Selecting the best gasoline for your needs

Eleven stupid car myths

Next Time Fill It Up With Regular...

From the "Ask A Scientist" Archive

But lets see what the oil companies themselves have to say:

SHELL:

"Engines are designed to a specified octane requirement ... Once that octane level has been met, in normal instances your car will not experience more power or better mileage if you use a higher octane fuel."

EXXON/MOBIL:

"Car manufacturers will specify ... a minimum octane to be used with their automobiles. Ordinarily, your vehicle will not benefit from using a higher octane than is recommended in the owner’s manual. But, if your engine knocks or pings at the recommended octane level, you may need a higher octane gasoline..."

BRITISH PETROLEUM:

"Our premium gasolines have the highest octane of our gasolines and can help cars that benefit from premium gasolines to achieve peak performance. However ... lower sulfur benefits the vehicle population at large and not just vehicles that benefit from premium gasolines.

All were found by going the websites and just doing a search for "octane" or just look in their respective FAQ.

Don't forget, these are the people who want your money more than anything and they only concede as little as they do so they can defend themsleves as honest instead of perpetuating the myth (which they also do through subtle advertising that clearly works)
