Hi,

I ordered a Yaris colour collection on sunday and im picking it up on next wednesday, the Toyota sales man rang me up today asking me if i had got insurance for the car, i said no and he told me about Toyotas GAP insurance.

What i wanted to know is do any of you have it and is it worth getting it?

Many Thanks

depends on you.

If the car is written off in the first year - its quite likely the settlement from the insurance company will be lower than the money you owe on the HP agreement...

This GAP insurance covers this - BUT it is expensive for what it is.

Its all down to personal taste.

Gap cover is well worth it - its extra cost, but it makes up what you paid for your car - my insurance only gave me £7000 for my 10 month old Yaris T-Spirit last year - the GAP insurance made up the extra 3 grand so basically my old car was paid off and I no longer owe any money on it, making me free to go out and buy another, which also has GAP insurance on it!

Its always worth it - you never know whats gonna happen!

Its not just for the first year too - its for the life of your finance agreement - whether thats 3 years or 5 years or whatever. In the first year, as long as you have fully comp insurance, your insurance company can offer you a replacement vehicle, which my insurance were going to do but I would have had to wait over Christmas and I couldnt do that.

Basically your insurance company will only pay out the current market value of your car - even if its written off and its only 2 weeks old, you'll still lose a few grand - IMO that extra tenner a month or whatever it is I pay, is worth saving that extra few grand!

what EM said is all true, you can take out GAP insurance even if you don’t get the car on finance and pay cash, you can buy it on it own which is the way I sell it, if I were you I’d take it out but make sure you price it with a few finance companies as GAP insurance is a great money maker for a dealer, over here it cost a dealer €350 and we can ask what we want for it, so make sure you don’t get over charged, but its very good. The one I sell cover up to a max GAP of €16500 and covers up to 5 years, which covers a yaris perfect

How are you financing your car b1nda? Is it with a personal loan, your own money or Toyota?

My 1st Yaris I finances with a personal loan and I took the Gap Insurance through Alliance & Leicester with my loan..... this Yaris is with Toyota finance, and my GAP Insurance is in with that.... they both do the same thing though.... I'm sure you can buy GAP Insurance from Toyota even if you are paying with your own dosh....

Are you buying from Listers Coventry btw? I bought my 1st Yaris from them!

that looks ok, the dealer is trying to make a little himself by selling you GAP from him but if he is around the same maybe take it up with him but like don`t give £550 for it, just make sure the maxinam gap and period in the GAP insurance is enough to cover your car. if you are planning to keep the car for 3 years there is no need for a 5 year GAP and that the max pay out is enough to cover your car as in a max payout of £5000 is too low a pay out of 90% or more of the New Value of the car is enough.

All the GAP company need to know is how much the vehicle cost you to buy - if the worst should happen and the car is written off, all you do is provide evidence of the amount the insurance has paid you and the GAP Insurance will cover the remaining amount......

the GAP insurance is based on the invoice price of the car or better knowen as the cash price with no trade in of the car. so in the case for example in 2 years the car is for a number of reasons written off (i hope this never happens to you) and the

invoice price of the car when it new=£16000

current market value of car=£7500

comprehensive insurance value=£7500

shortfall on orginal price=£8500

because you will have no trade as your orginal a the car is a write off then this is the reason the GAP insurance works off the invoice price of your car and in the case above will pay a shortfall of £8500 to get you into your new car, they may as you for the invoice price or they may ask the dealer (if you don`t take it with him), don`t worry as i hope you will never have to use.

for me the gap cover was only £300 from Toyota, so your not saving much on your cheapest quote, but it is worth having, £300 is easier to find to pay the gap insurance, than £3000-£8000 in 3 years time, to replace the car

Yep. Got my Gap insurance reduced to £250 as part of the deal. Well worth it for peace of mind.

Managed to get GAP Insurance "Free of charge" in with my deal when I bought the Yaris.

Dealer was not keen at first but I insisted "No GAP - No deal" and he arranged it.

I agree with DA that the normal motor insurance (mine anyway...Direct Line) will replace car with exact same new model if mine is written off within first 12 months of registration, but the GAP takes over from there.
